The Crusades were an effort sponsored by the Catholic faith (and some
kings) to recapture the "holy land" from the Islamics.  The church granted
indulgences to those who participated and promised a straight path to heaven
for anyone killed in the endeavors (no virgins, though, AFAIK).  Yes, Islam
spread
by the sword and they are not by any means to be excluded from criticism
for that.  But the statement that organized religion is responsible for more
deaths than any other non-natural cause is true.

The Crusades, incidentally, overall were a complete failure.

Nope.  'tis a fact.  Facts are, after all, stubborn things.  Look to your bible
to see how many wars were fought by God's chosen people, and how many
people they killed before Jesus showed up.

It is also a fact that not *all* wars were caused by organized religion; Rome
vs Carthage for example, more recently WW I, WW II, Korea and Vietnam.
And some wars were fought for very stupid reasons - the War of Jenkins' Ear,
for example.

I've never taken a college level history class, or FTM a college level
English class (I CLEP'ed both English Comp and English Lit - also Psychology
and
Sociology, FWIW).  I do read a lot, however, and have a bookshelf eight feet
long
and floor-to-ceiling that contains books about historical subjects and people. 
About
half of them published before 1960 and a few before 1900.  The other three
walls
of the room, floor to ceiling, contain books on other subjects - including
several on
various religions.

I have two bachelor's degrees from two different accredited institutions.  Had
I
finished my thesis I'd have a master's; the fellow mentoring my group was a
horse's posterior, of the 20 or so in the group only two completed their
respective
theses.
