Back in the late 1970s or early 1980s (forgot exactly which year)
a flame war was ignited in the New York Times letters to the editor
section when some folks suggested that Puff the Magic Dragon was a
song about American soldiers using dope in the Vietnam War.  The
singers Peter, Paul and Mary took issue with that and wrote their
own letters saying it was a children's song based on the legends
of King Arthur.  And since they had written the song, they should
know.

However, the song really was about American soldiers using dope
in the Vietnam War, as the words suggest.  To prove it, each word
is referenced in a slang dictionary, with the proper meaning.
