I'm experimenting.  So far I've got

The ID would be how I reference the visual object.  OBJTYPE would be something
like 'JPEG' or 'MOV' or such, to allow my code to handle different object types
differently.  I'm thinking of changing this to an actual MIME-type rather than
a simple descriptive string.  The two SIZE# fields can hold the (x,y)
dimentions of an image, which would allow code to work out it's aspect ratio
and do other stuff.  A .MOV file might use a size in bytes and NULL for these
values.  I think I'll have to change SMALLINT to INT if I'm to manage objects
of several megabytes!  OBJURL/PATH/FILE will allow me to construct a full link
to the object as in "www.anjo.com", "rc/aircraft/zagi3c", "knife-edge.jpg".  Or
replace the OBJURL with DOCUMENT_ROOT to get a path to the file for local
fiddling.  By having the filename separate allows me to munge parts of this. 
For example, the default thumbnail might be found by concatenating "/.thumb"
with the OBJPATH.  Or the filename could be munged with a leading "_" or
something.  The object does not necessarily have to be on my server, so I could
include an image off someone elses site directly in my page by setting OBJ*
suitably.  And maybe set OBJURL to NULL to default to Apache's SERVER_NAME so
as not to have to specify my own server over and over again?  The THUMB*
columns allow me to specify a thumbnail that is not directly related to the
object itself.  For instance a JPEG thumbnail for a scene from a .MOV file
would be possible.  If THUMB* were NULL, then perhaps a standard munging scheme
could be followed to locate the thumbnail.  ALTATTR would specify the ALT= text
in any final URL.  And CAPTION would allow a fairly big descriptive passage to
be attached.  Click the thumbnail and the fullsized image option is displayed
along with the CAPTION...

:-)  I've changed my mind several times already today, so by the time you read
this post it may all be totally different again.
