You can go back by using emerge -unemerge name so will the not working emerging
tool taken out and the old system go back.
If a ebuild not is done well is it still the old there is in use, by run emerge
and compiling a tools and system will the compling and system normally make a
log and on screen end with thing have gone, and by in the main file make.conf
put in 6-7 special command can the system do it so it after a emerge and
compiling make a lig file for it and send te log file as a email to you and
told you of errors, warnings, what to do to make the new compiled stuff work
for you.
When the emerging and compiling is well done will emerge and the ebuild make a
new tar.gz tar.bz2 on your system.
The way emerge and ebuild is working on is read your portage directory for the
tools package and the go worldwide to mirrors and home for example gentoo and
look for updates, and if no updates found it using your own portage to be
unpacking to source and compiled, and the sources is compiled for best use of
your hardware and mashine.
The best emerge and ebuild is for x86 system where not all amd64 ebuilds and
portage not is all well working, and have to be done with x86 and older files
co versions of the tools.

MK>Also, what if one doesn't have access to the internet or an extremely
MK>slow connection? What good is an ebuild to them?

If a slow Internet and connection can still use ebuild as the system first have
to getting the tool home and made to portage tar balls, the is it up to you of
not take all mirrors use for make and emerge by, emerge and ebuild is working
by first download and then compile files, so by 3-4 mirrors it goes download
compile download compile etc. and after download it too merge updates to old
files. If no new updates is found on mirror 1 2 3 emerge and the ebuild just
unpacking the tar files and connect to mirror 4 and checking here for updates
and download the update package disconnecto from the mirror and unpack the
updates package, begin to compile and isntall the file program and then packing
the sources to tar bz2 for each version and ending with clean up world and make
a log and email to you.

GKA>> Some tools have to be download as tar.bz2 package that they not is

MK>Understood. Most, if not all, source is either tar.gz or tar.bz2. I

MK>What format is the final package and is it compatible with ALL linux

GKA>> Such as mc and ncftp is in gentoo portages as ebuild and is updates
GKA>> by emerge + is istalled right for using.

MK>Understood but is in ready for install to ANY linux distribution
MK>without any conversion? Slackware's tgz's and ttylinux tbz's are. Can
 MK>gentoo make the same claim?

Most ebuild is make for its one linux system and is getting from mirrors for
that and same is the program package, ebuild is making the tar.bz2 as versions
and depend on how the ebuild is made and told to do by working.
You can self tell and let a ebuild know what it is for and what system it run
on, and type of pack it shall make updates have.

  Take care,
     Gert
