Depends on the wireless chip.  I've had nothing but problems with AP mode but
instead just put it in adhoc mode and use iproute2 to do the fancy networking
stuff.  That has worked out best all things considered.  However at the moment
I am just using iptables to control a NAT capable kernel with a rt2500 added
module and wireless_tools.  This also works out well no matter what the client
is, including a windows box.  The downside of this is security which could be
handled by providing a dhcp host but in the situation here there are no other
wireless boxes in range and also if there were they'd still need to provide the
proper information in order to properly route since the NAT doesn't handle that
end of the bargain.

Also mdev (busybox) might have to be enabled if the wireless requires loading
firmare.  I did that working but again it was with an ralink based pci wireless
card that is now on the new xeon based box I am typing on.

All in all it is a tad tricky at the moment but is doable.

Interesting.  Offhand that is more than sufficient hardware-wise for the job at
hand.

So did you plan for the laptop to be a bridge between your respective machines?

Not that I am aware of.  I use none of that.  As we speak we're using the AMD64
based system as a wireless bridge between Paul's place and mine booting off of
an ide flash disk (8M ramdisk).  I want to update it but as is works fine.  I
also did the same for Paul on an older Dell server he picked up for a song
(also rt2500).  No firmware on either so that made things really easy.  I
probably have a 32-bit wireless_tools package lying around here somewhere and
for sure have a build script that will work for either 32-bit and 64-bit.  If
you need firmware I could update the busybox build script and make sure mdev is
turned on.
