Outside of BBSing, I don't know if zmodem is still in use.  But, there's
nothing particularly wrong with it.  It's just one of many file transfer
protocols that are available, including FTP, HTTP, etc.  At least with regard
to Synchronet, those are all provided via the BBS software.

I think it was more a case of Internet access allowing greater/easier access to
the world, eventually at higher speeds (broadband), than BBSes could provide at
the time.  I know that the part I miss most about active BBSing is the
communities, though, which don't exist or flourish so easily on the Internet.

Linux is POSIX compliant, but it's not a Unix.  The terms are somewhat
interchangeable nowadays, but my point was that "diehard Unix" guys usually
actually use a Unix or Unix-based system, not something simply built to
resemble one.

Ahhh, I misunderstood.  I thought initially you said you were using it as your
main system.  But, for mobile/embedded work, there are a lot of other, smaller,
faster, more efficient systems available for a reasonable amount of money.  I'm
partial to the Soekris boards myself (http://www.soekris.com).
