Ärende: Saying it doesn't make it so
====================================
Hey Jeff!

[ sed s/"It"/"Fido"/ next_line]
> It doesn't "belong" on the web, but the web contributes to it.
> Less tech-savy people can use it that way

In what way exactly? I see mostly sysops using FTN based editors offline. As
near as I can tell I am the only one actually attempting to make your idea work
userly-speaking. Also the messages I've seen on a web based BBS are readily
downloadable without a login so that a user could potentially be anyone and not
an actual Fido user. Both my examples - the extreme poorly formatted one and
the more realistic one - were both obtained without a login using wget without
a username and password. Do you believe that is acceptable for any Fido BBS?

[ sed s/"it"/"available local software"/ next_line]
> But you're looking at it from your own property's perspective

Yes. I am a user not a sysop, Very few web users have or need web servers on
their local machine. Right?

> You do if you want to use them via a web browser

Java? Not here I don't. Everything works great without either Java or/and
Javascript. In fact the few web based clients I have here don't use
java{,script} even if it was available. This never was an issue and will
likely never will be.

I could easily function on the internet without the www but I admit that some
httpd servers have their rightful place on a well functioning network. The
rest can keep their crap because that is really what it is. I've seen enough to
know better.

> which is sometimes all one has on a machine, as I've been trying
> to point out.

That is an extremely sad situation. That has never happened here. What for?
Who in their right mind would want that, nevermind pay money for it?!?!?!?!?!?!

> Again, you don't have those tools if it's not your machine.

That has never happened. I've only worked with VMS and Solaris based machines
that I had access to from a home based 386 after I got serial communications
working correctly on the 386 (old DOS stuff with an available c compiler).
That was ages ago and once the 386 was logged into ye ol' Sparc server the
correct tools were available. I don't understand why they wouldn't be
available. What lame server are you logging into where those tools aren't
availabe? Hopefully you're getting paid well to "use" whatever crap they're
dishing out. I know I'd insist on the BIG bucks to have to compensate for what
they lack.

[ sed s/"it"/"web tools"/ next_line]
> You apparently do use it more than you'd probably care to admit!

Not that much. Certain sites get hits from here more often than the norm but
it depends on what I am doing at the time. That can and is handy but if it
weren't I wouldn't lose much sleep over it and would compensate when it
mattered. That has been my experience so far. The norm here is very little
www usuage when compared to computer usuage in general. gcc usage is at the
top of the list cpu-usuage-wise and cpat user-usuage-wise while gcc is doing
it's thing. Occasionally I go nuts on the www but that isn't the norm. ftp
gets far more bandwidth then http, especially on the LANs. I even stream
mutimedia with ftp. Nothing beats it's performance.

> And actually, the web browser is multi-functional,

You mean of course yours. For me a browser is a browser and nothing else. I
have better tools at my disposal for the rest and even those are built to do
whatever it is they are best at. That is thee Unix way.

> For all that goes, one could just as easily store Fido mail in XML

If you're looking to cripple the idea. Raw text in whatever standard (ascci
here) is all that is required. Anything else just slows things down and makes
for more stinkin' dependencies. As for an editor vi is all there is or should
be. ;-)

> just good old-fashioned debate of differences in opinions as far as
> I'm concerned. Sometimes it's hard to portray the mood in text!

That works for me. Even if it wasn't I wouldn't mind that either. I am
extremely stubborn and thick skinned so you'd have a real challenge if your
mode was opposite.

I am extra, extra special.

Life is good,
Maurice
