Ärende: A kiss is just a kiss
=============================
Hey James!

> You don't know where my lips have been.

I am fairly certain that I don't really want nor need to know. A good question
might be, does your wife know?

>> This is especially true on the EM64T quad core
> Now, *that's* the extra, "extra".

In all honesty I would have to agree. It surpassed my expectations for it by
33% extra. I had an initial job for it to do and said to the neighbour
beforehand that if it could accomplish it in 45 minutes I'd be satisfied. It
took it 27 minutes and did an excellent job while it was at it. I was extra
satisfied and have since said, "I'd buy another one." I don't often say that
these days about anything. The only outstanding issue is with the P35 chipsets
and a particular bios error about one of the usb functions. It is nonfatal but
does cause a lag on bootup. If I didn't hotswap drives on usb I'd disable the
usb in the bios but as is it is only an annoyance that I seem to be getting
away with ... for now. Everything else is doing great, the G450 pci Martox card
being amongst my favorite. Sure am glad I never got suckered into buying a
pci-e one. :-)

Speaking of which, I have had good success with the onboard Intel 950 pci-e
graphics but still prefer Matroxes, and am happy with plain old pci based ones.
Also there is no equivalent to mga_vid for Intels, or anything else for that
matter, so for my purposes I am happy with the new box as is.

> I would tend toward an "oddball implementation".

AH! Yeah that would explain much if not all flakiness. I try and avoid that
type of hardware. NForce/NVidia crap comes to mind lately as being the
benchmark of what is wrong with that particular business model. They can keep
them. Thank goodness there are much better alternatives.

That is a very reasonable guesstimation. I've seen simular happen with pcmcia
devices that worked 100% on 2.4 kernels but fail miserable on 2.6 kernels with
the new fangled pcmcia implimentation. I did get ye ol' pcmcia_cs modules
working on a 2.6 kernel but without it warning me that the modules may not
work. They did work though whereas the new fangled ones didn't. It was a
Texas Instruments based setup. Worked great when it mattered. I retired it
since I no longer needed pcmcia.

> I did have the 2400 updated, until I used a Dell array 'utility'
> to screw it up.

AH! Sounds like something my neighbour would do. Live and learn eh?

> I'm just about to send Dell a 'nice' message.

I doubt that will be a first for them. :-/

> We'll see how well Dell can direct my misguided efforts.

You're obviously a real dreamer ... no?

> run "wide" or "ultra" or "2" or whatever, to double the drive count.

I think that would be the best option. If it matters to you, I'd vote for it.
Meithinks RAID is for people who don't know what they're doing and/or don't
care and/or are too lazy to learn how to effecintly manage their system(s).

> Did you want to see the starter, that was utilized as a 12V branch

> spring-spacers?

The entire shebang up close and personal. I can wait.

> Now, only if the arse will deliver on his second promise...

These days I'd be happy that he - whoever "he" is - delivered on the first one!
That is becoming rarer ... as time goes by.

Life is good,
Maurice
