Could be much truth there.  From the few I've seen I'd tend to agree with much
of what you say.  I like some of the cases although I'd have done them a tad
different.

I wouldn't know.  I used to prefer the external Motorola ones way back when and
other than many netork cards never had a chance to peruse any other 3com
products.  Those were okay but can't say anything about any of their modems one
way or the other.  Most of the serial based products I used to use never really
had much to do with communications other than modems and preferred those since
the basic serial protocols/software/etc. was well established on any system I
had the pleasure working with, including my own.  That was a long time ago in a
land far, far away.

A very honourable strategy except then I'd suggest sicking to the basics would
be more prudent an approach if looking to maximize utilization and minimize
wasted money and other resources.  Seeing you already have the drives than a
half-decent scsi contoller without the raid would be best as far as bang for
the buck is concerned.

That would be best but I haven't run across any of those.  Usually a feature of
the more pricey servers along with hard to come by parts, such as suitable
trays.  Hence why I currently use usb instead since that was far more easier to
achieve if and when hotswapping is required. Way cheaper although nowhere near
as good or reliable as a proper scsi controller.  Mind you scsi drives aren't
that readily available around here whereas sata ones are and theortically can
be hotswapped and are cheaper.  As of this moment I haven't run across a proper
esata controller but I see them out there in the rest of the cold, cruel world.
 Beats me if they actually work but I did get one of the early pci based ones
to successfully hotswap even though it wasn't supposed to be able to do that.

Heh, heh.  Yeah I don't do that anymore since moving along.  The ones I had did
get employed on a couple of older P2/P3 Dell servers.  Worked out good and I
learned.  Now I would go with straight ide and/or sata flash disks and save
much grief.  I still have a 1G 44-pin one I am looking to redeploy on a
suitable system.  I did have it on the 486 but I decided it didn't really need
that much so now I am thinking it could be better used on something requiring
that much disk space at it's disposal.
