Not to worry, sometimes I wonder myself.  The 'whoami' command works but given
the username is part of the prompt 'whoami' is redundant. Nice to have though
just in case.

Yes if and when that particular job becomes thee job.  The current scheme is to
test all sorts of ideas for hotswapping so keeping it fluid (ie not married to
anything via udev) seems most appropriate at the moment. I do have a bash
script that calls up some sysfsutils stuff, as well as sdparm, if and when I
want to install to a hotswapped drive and make bootable for a targetted system.
 It needs some tweaking but as is works pretty slick so far.  That is how I got
a 2.5" sata hd booting on the Intel Atom board.  No optical drives needed and
that *is* the goal.

Do you mean the syslinux labelling scheme?  I am not sure what you mean by
'titles'.

Moreso the repetition of characters as well as the size of the file. I forget
offhand the lower limit of the filesize but discounting that then a file
containing the entire alphabet or the ASCII table won't compress since there is
no repetition whatsoever.  If you were to convert that to binary (ie zeroes and
ones) then they'd compress extremely well simply because of the repeated
characters being ONLY zeroes and ones. The reciever would have to know to
convert that information back to ASCII characters.  That scheme will work well
except I doubt it is worth it for what little savings are yeilded these days. 
I doubt from an ordinary user's perspective it would be but maybe to a large
distribution server it would save MUCH bandwidth.  Given the recent popularity
of text messaging then I'd imagine from the server's perspective compression
would be a good idea but only between other distribution servers and not so
much between the server and the end user, even from the server's perspective
UNLESS the end user is absorbing the extra cost, which they probably are.

Understood.  I like the doorway idea, from both the sysop's and end user's
perspectives, BUT never did care for the unneeded and unwanted extra bandwidth
created by typical BBSing doors.  I *know* that could be readily altered to
suit pure text messaging as well as retaining file attachments if that is a
desirable thing.  To be honest I prefer sticking to ftp for file transfers.  I
have yet to see anything that beats ftp. scp is nice if one cares about
encrypted exchanges.  Perhaps that could be exploited for a text messaging
doorway.  Slows thing down dramtically but that is the price to be paid if and
when secure connections between a remote and a BBS is a desirable attribute.

Just babbling.  It changes from message to message.  Seems to me you were the
one who pointed that out to start with.
