Hey All!

Taking this opportunity to upgrade mplayer/mencoder and thought someone might
be interested in the current build.  This is on the native, pure 64-bit,
minimalinuxed Slackware-ish x86_64 dealie.  I haven't tested it out on the
so-called i386 dealie yet.  I am not convinced that it will actually work on a
real 32-bit system and am also not convinced it needs to.  Chances are good it
may never come to me ever using it. Your mileage may vary.

The two main extra dependencies needed for xvid capabilities for the movie idea
are yasm and of course xvidcore, with yasm required before building and
installing xvidcore so that it can exploit the boost it will get from yasm wrt
threading.  This way mencoder will also benefit from the additional boost
provided by yasm.  More about this later in this message.

I used this configuration to mplayer;

  ./configure --prefix=/usr --confdir=/etc/mplayer --enable-largefiles

and then;

  make $JOBS

where on my system JOBS="-j 8" and is an importable enviroment variable into
bash based build scripts.  I have all the gcc related variables in
/etc/profile.d/cstuff.sh which are loaded when any user logs into the system. 
This idea makes build scripts vastly easier to write and keeps them more
generic as far as developing native based applications. They can be overridden
when the need arises.

Output from the resulting mplayer yields;

It should be noted that "v4l2    V4L2 MPEG Video Decoder Output" would
require ivtv stuff which is g++ and therefore not compatible with this
particular system.  However I have tested it when I did have g++ onboard and
could successfully pipe the output of /dev/video0 to mencoder to convert into
an xvid on-the-fly with this particular cpu thanks to yasm. Without yasm it
couldn't do it on-the-fly without vastly reducing the quality on the mpeg2
input of /dev/video0 which would have to be preset with the v4l2-ctrl app
provided by ivtv.  With yasm this isn't an issue. Therefore yasm is a keeper.

Someone sent me a movie the other day they made with a digital movie camera
that was encoded using jpeg motion.  mplayer played it fine. I suspect the same
will be true with png once mencoder converts them into xvid.  At present I am
still finetuning the kernel for this system and have had great success with
that so far.  Managed to upgrade to linux-2.6.28.3 but had to ditch all the ide
stuff as it was interfering with pata/sata, but that is another story.
