Offhand that would appear to be true but in this part of the world there is
nobody doing anything remotely like that since around 98-ish. Even those using
dialup modems at that time were only using them for ppp logins to their isp and
a few using them for faxing.  A couple years ago I got suckered into binkd to
connect to my then uplink in Langley but he passed on and all that fell by the
wayside.  If that hadn't happened I might have found a suitable fix for the
flakieness observed but given the lack of localized use of POTS for such things
it fell by the wayside.

Yep.  One good reason not to use (x)inetd and use an ftpd that doesn't require
one to use the standard internet ftp ports.  I can say the same about sshd.

Good question.  I started bitching about it when others around me wanted me to
fix their computers.  I wouldn't have minded - and in fact I didn't - except it
became too much of a burden and especially the lack of appreciation on their
part.  I discovered at the time that by insulting MS and their need for such
crap kept them at bay.  Now it seems it has become a bad habit but it still
keeps them at bay so I keep it up ... I guess.

Not that I know for sure, but from I've seen others doing with Windows
98/2000/XP and somewhat Vista, I would have to agree with your assessment.
However could we pick a better benchmark for comparison of how well a Fidonet
hub/node performs?  I honestly think it could be MUCH better than the last time
I tried, albiet just as a node.  'Better' is a very misleading concept.
