Hey Russell!

Using the recommended samba-3.4.0.tar.gz from www.samba.org.  According to
'ls' it is 35308255 bytes and is the full meal deal.

Near as I can tell this produces the 'best' results so that the wanted client
runtimes won't require any additional libs.

./configure --prefix=/usr --sysconfdir=/etc --libdir=/usr/lib \
  --localstatedir=/var --with-piddir=/var/run --with-fhs \
  --with-cifsmount --enable-static=yes --enable-shared=no

I found this interestiug.

But wait ... it seems to think it still might have a chance;

Not likely eh?  There was a bunch of other output but the above made me
snicker.  No stinkin' python here.

Anyhoo did a 'make -j 8' just to see if it would crap out and it didn't. The
end result dependency-wise for smbclient is as follows (your mileage may vary);

linux-vdso.so.1 <- 2.6 kernel compatibilty thingy for older c libs
libreadline.so.6 <- have noticed compatibilty issues with this version
libncurses.so.5 <- should be fine
libz.so.1 <- whatever

The rest are all glibc; libresolv.so.2, libnsl.so.1, libdl.so.2, libc.so.6, and
ld-linux-x86-64.so.2

From my understanding these are all the client runtimes you will need;

script/{findsmb,smbtar}
bin/{rpcclient,smbcacls,smbclient,smbcquotas,smbget,smbspool,smbtree}

On a pure 64 bit system the above comes out to ~22M and would put my proposed
ramdisk over the 64M limit and thus would need to be increased to 128M.  Could
do less but I prefer stick to doubling sizes when needed (eg. 4, 8, 16, 32, 64,
126, 256, etc.).

Good thing I neither need nor want it but it was sort of interesting figuring
it out.  I could easily make a build/packaging script if you'd like or perhaps
you'd like to come up with your own based on the above information or even
better from a samba guru who thinks you require python and additional stuff I'd
rather not know about.  I am more than happy with the packages I listed in a
previous post to you and even that is a tad more bloated than it needs to be
but I thought I'd take care of a few dependencies for some server apps I might
be inclined to add to a ramdisk destined for a flash disk.  I tried it out on a
44 pind flash disk I happen to have on the Atom and it had no issues with it
all. I am extremely doubtful it will ever encounter samba shares.  It can play
mp3's, dvd's, xvids, ogg, etc. as well as connect to ftp servers, surf the www,
display graphics via framebuffers - using vesafb on the Atom and fbi for
viewing jpegs, pngs, etc.  Was thinking of adding pdf viewing but that
possibilty added far too much bloat and isn't worth the weight in bytes
methinks.

So far so good.  Interested?  We could set something up between us if you are
but don't sweat it if you aren't as I am more than okay with looking after my
own wants/needs.
