Although I haven't used parted for a while, some time back I expanded my
hda1 WinXP partition without any problems with the installed XP. Although
I changed my linux setup I was able to do it without losing any of the
backed up stuff one accumulates building and destroying linux setups until
they are the way I like them.

The area of 2 and 3 will be available for you to expand into and also
make a swap. I don't see a problem with the data on hda1. Your setup should
be fine.

WC> Reassure me as the only time Linux has ever messed up on

Take your time with it. You can do as you like with what you have
and if your not sure just don't commit the changes. If panic sets
in you can give it the three finger salute and no harm will be done.

WC> So you're saying I can delete the top two, not bother with mkfs -t
WC> ext3, expand partition 1 up to some arbitrary endpoint 1.5 Gig into
WC> partition 3 then recreate swap and smaller hda3 without a problem?

Parted will decide boundaries so just run it and fiddle. If in doubt shit
out. Don't commit.

WC> The reason I need the room is I need to install Open Office to

WC> My concern regards your comment above about wanting to keep the data on
WC> the upper partitions as that's the data that's expendable, hda1 is not.

It's a good plan. Office on hda1 will eliminate any conflicts for the install.

WC> Anyway you've got to admit if I don't do it right I've trashed
WC> the system and other than not having Open Office it's just now setup
 WC> exactly as I like.

Well you don't need me to tell you to think of any configuration work you've
done and back up the scripts.

WC> I couldn't believe OO wasn't on 12.2 slack, it was on the install for
WC> 10.2 and that was a disk shorter than the three 12.2 came on.

WC> Koffice in KDE is buggy and doesn't offer the options Open Office does.

I use OOf a lot and recommend it.
