Yeah, I know, nothing is set into stone until rebooting.

I think I'll follow Maurice's cautious advice though.

I'm pretty comfortable with Linux but the redundancy of
a second drive is a very reasonable precaution.

I've done some pretty dangerous stuff at the command line
and for the most part get it right but why risk it 
when I need not?

A good plan and why I originally kept hda3 out of etc/fstab
as my intentions were anticipating this sort of thing.
I'm just a bit chicken on this one and decided to play it safe.

I've editted grub and lilo.conf and turned an ext2 FS with 
data into an ext3 journaled FS and got it right but something
tells me to remain cautious here and take the safe route.

I'll put the new drive in, do a fresh install, install
all the upgrades I've done and copy over my configuration files -
then I'll muck around with parted.

No doubt I'll be successful but just for the chance I'm
not this is the way I'll go.

I've got it here but not compiled and installed awaiting a new HD.
