Ärende: she blinded me with science
===================================
Hey Mark!

Exactly how many power supplies would you recommend? Also given an average of
six outlets on a power bar one would require a number of them as well as the
outlets to connect them to unless one were to daisy chain a number of them to a
given wall outlet. Offhand, assuming six CD-ROMs per power supply, I am
guesstimating at least 45 power supplies and 8 power bars to pull this off. I
am not taking into account whether or not the average household breaker will
allow this to happen or the room where the computer is will have that many
outlets without employing the daisy chaining idea and then more power bars
would be needed since you'd lose one outlet per power bar in the chain.

> for one thing, there are no timeouts over POTS...

Yes but nothing to dialup so the offlining idea is still more desirable.

> 2nd is that you can, in many cases, transfer faster over a

Given the lack of any machine at the other end of the dedicated circuit then
transfer speeds are meaningless. In this situation in order to dialup anything
of consequence would require toll charges that far outweigh any increase in
attention the other end would allow for.

> that depends on their interfaces and the code accessing them

Or if the multple CD thingy also has multiple lasers which can physically scan
all the CD's without having to move anything. I was under the impression that
there is a tray that rotates and that only one CD is accessable at any given
moment.

> this should be easy enough to implement... rather like a CDDB
> lookup based on the CD number...

I am still chewing on the idea of being able to physically being able to access
the theoretical limit of CD-ROMs nevermind what is on the CD's themselves.
However your above stated idea sounds practical.

> besides that, one nly need to access the database,

So then what or who would put in the proper CD that corresponds to the choice
made from the database?

 MK> Hm.

> ;)

Uh-huh.

> ummm... a playlist can contain music from several albums so it
> isn't like you listen to only one whole album before putting
> on the next one...

Yes but I am not digital and the playlist is whatever I am in the mood for as
well as changing the album on the turntable is a very analogue event. At the
moment the computer in question isn't being very helpful in other than to
actually digitize the inputted signal from the turnable and even that part I
have to decide what options I think would be best and then tell the software
the desired parameters/formatting as well as when to start and stop recording.
The stored playlist is the least of my worries in this scam ... errrr ...
scheme.

> them in any fashion you want and then play them back in
> sequential or random order...

Once it is all digitized and stored. However that doesn't help any if all the
desired music is still on a CD or vinyl (<- in my particular case).

> makes the task of accessing those files a no brainer... just
> file->open->locate->click and it's done no matter it lives...

Not on my computers. I don't do that for myself. I seem to enjoy interacting
at a more fundemental level (ie commandline) with everything. As for transfers
to any other machine nobody has had any issues with ftp, even the IE crippled
boxes. Nobody who accesses anything here has ever complained and I highly
doubt any other method would be less resource hungry or faster. I have to see
anything beat ftp.

> you must have... you or someone else gaven and example of using
> a video format and printing it...

I don't recall seeing anything like that. The closest I recall is posting once
about using jpeg, png and even pdf formatted graphics to create a movie but
never the other way around. I haven't owned a printer in almost two decades
now. What for?

MK> Wow! That is an excellent deal.

> i can't believe you haven't heard or see of such?

Not for that little amount, and especially not a pci card. The last suitable
one I saw was years ago and it cost well over 200 CAD. The latest and greatest
I've heard about is a pci express two port gigabit jobber and that also costs
over 200 CAD. Wouldn't be suitable for the Atom given the lack of a pci
express slot. A decent single port pci gigabit jobber is pushing 100 CAD once
the dust settles (shipping and taxes).

> for use with smoothwall express for a small footprinted but
> very powerful firewall appliance that you build, control and
> can modify...

Right. I am with you there. So where are you getting the cards from?

> especially if there's some kind of storm that knocks out the
> power

Yep. Also if away from the local network and needing to nab something from a
remote with no internetted connection. That was more what I think would be
handy and a potential lifesaver if the need ever arose. This type of activity
is what first attracted me to put up a BBS a couple lifetimes ago. I can still
see some potential for POTS despite the latest personal usuage of it these
days.

Life is good,
Maurice
