Ärende: It did WHAT?!

I've got a disk with WinME in hda1, swap in hda2, Linux in hda3, and a
FAT storage partition in hda5.  I want to move it to a different drive.
I used Partition Magic 6 to set it up.  Not so fast bunky, the disk had
been originally configured with MaxBLAST's EZ-drive, and PM6 wouldn't
touch it.  So first I had to use Maxtor's llf.  I made a 2047MB primary
partition for WinME, a 200MB primary for swap, and then I got clever.
I made a 2047MB logical for FAT storage from the end, and then filled in
the third primary with everything left in the middle for Linux.  I used
Ghost to move the WinME and FAT storage partitions, then booted Linux to
copy itself to hda3.  And then things went very, very, very wrong.

Again PM6 wouldn't touch it, so llf again, repartition, Ghost, etc.  So
that was the better part of an afternoon and evening down the drain!
This time I got more cautious at this stage.  For some unexplainable
mystical reason I ran Linux's fdisk to print the partition table.  It
followed it's display with a message that the partitions weren't in disk
order.  What PM6 had done was make the partition table in the order I
did it.  hda3 was the extended partition wrapper at the end, hda4 was
for Linux in the middle, and hda5 was the FAT storage logical partition!
When I copied Linux into what I expected to be hda3, it was blasting the
extended partition wrapper.

So now I've been back to PM6 to blow away partitions 3, 4, & 5, and then
made them again in the simple, direct, unclever way.  I'm to the stage
of moving the FAT storage partition, then Linux, running mkswap just in
case Linux doesn't like what PM6 did, and then grubbing the new drive
into bootable form.  I think.  News at 11.

Be warned that what you're usually told about the order Linux assigns
hdaX numbers is different than what you're usually told.  It depends on
the order in which they were made in the partition table, and that could
be different than you expect.  The book is right ASSUMING you did things
in certain ways.
