Ärende: do you remember when
============================
> we're not talking about solely at _your_ place... we're talking
> about in general all over the world...

MK> Ah! Are you aware of anyone anywhere who is offering that service
MK> and is reachable with a multimedia player?

yup, actually... there are quite a few streaming "radio stations" available on
the internet... i listen to one from los angeles all the time :P

[trim]

> filesharing stuff for

MK> Right. Except it was someone else who brought it up. I was never
MK> personally interested in the idea, especially not samba but also
MK> said at the time I don't even use nfs although having used it off
MK> and on in the past. ftp is fine with me.

understand that... however, ftp is not as easy to use and definitely not from a
multimedia sharing point of view :)

> access it via the network without copying or duplicating it on
> to the local HD (for all intents and purposes)...

MK> That works with ftp(d). On the client end I just use wget and pipe
MK> that to a player. Works fine. Also mplayer can achieve the exact
MK> same result without wget. I fail to see the need for samba.

:sigh: yes, ok... so that's one player that may be able to use FTP but not
everything is done that way and that's what i've been trying to point out and
explain more fully...

> i don't see how it has really degenerated all that much

MK> Samba is where the idea came unravelled. The target was a 64M
 MK> compact flash disk.

ok... but that doesn't mean anything to me in the context of the discussion of
sharing music files over a network between workstations and/ or a server...

> to clarify them and point out their plusses and minusses...

MK> Understood. See above. I had the whole shebang, with the
MK> potential for creating digital multimedia files, and a very good 64
MK> bit kernel geared to this idea, all in under 64M. Samba is the
MK> straw that broke it's back.

i can understand that... expecially if one is limited by available disk
space... 64M is pretty small but, FWIW, i do know of at least one
implementation that offers samba as an add-on and it all fits in less than 10MB
but it is not graphical not does it have a client MM player on it... to be more
specific, it is a dedicated firewall appliance that someone just happened to
create a samba mod for so that folk might also use it as a file server in
addition to its dedicated firewall duties :P

> color LCD screen from a cell phone?? :P

MK> That is way too small!

 you didn't specify a screen size :P ;)

MK> My eyes need a tad more real estate. I've seen a few DVD
MK> automobile players that are within my comfort zone. Now if I could
MK> find one of them without the rest - just the display - then that
MK> would be closer to what I want. I know they exist but haven't run
MK> across anyone selling them yet. The industrial suppliers have
MK> them but those are REALLY pricey.

yup... a small 10 inch LCD screen would appear to fit the ticket :P

> definitely not... you generate the most traffic in here

 MK> Someone has to.

hahahahahahaha...

MK> Too bad I am so hardcore and anal when it comes to linux eh?

phbtbtbtbtbtbtbt...

MK> Look ma!!! No stinkin' GUI!
