Ärende: mine eyes have seen the glory
=====================================
Hey Russell!

Wasn't really a guess. I've tried every trick in the book on Paul's machine
and boiled it down to only two working boot options; initrd and ramdisk. Of
the two I prefer ramdisk and then chrooting to a more capable system from there
if and when needed. A stock ttylinux with a proper kernel will work best with
this scheme.

The ttylinux part will work but I am not sure how you'd get the eeebuntu SD
card to boot directly from the SD card. They must be using an initrd if it
indeed works. If so then your plan has much merit and will definetly save on
writes to the onboard so-called disk since /var on ttylinux will be in
ramspace.

I will know later as we will be testing a new fangled idea with Paul's puppy
more or less centered around ttylinux, chrootable "Crowbait", and a adapter (<-
mostly to step down the voltage) wired into the DC infrastructure. So far so
good.

I call upon dd for stuff like that.

Kids these days.  :::sigh:::

> Could put all of the above on there, and have plenty space,

Yep. I have two like that here that I put together myself. Both have Hitachi
2.5" laptop drives. The one we're targetting for the eeepc's Crowbait looks
like this in dmesg when plugged into a hotswapping sata dealie on my main box;

 scsi 6:0:0:0: Direct-Access ATA Hitachi HTS54252 BBFO PQ:
 0 ANSI: 5
 sd 6:0:0:0: Attached scsi generic sg2 type 0
 sd 6:0:0:0: [sdc] 488397168 512-byte logical blocks: (250 GB/232 GiB)
 sd 6:0:0:0: [sdc] Write Protect is off
 sd 6:0:0:0: [sdc] Mode Sense: 00 3a 00 00
 sd 6:0:0:0: [sdc] Write cache: enabled, read cache: enabled, doesn't
 support DPO or FUA
  sdc: sdc1 sdc2 sdc3 sdc4
 sd 6:0:0:0: [sdc] Attached SCSI disk

The neat thing about it's external case is that it has connectors for usb and
sata. I highly recommend it. I've seen a few that even have firewire and sata
connectors. The other one has the same external connectors but internally
takes 44 pin drives. The one above is sata. Either could just as easily take
flash disks instead of the spinney equivalents. Choices are good. In this case
the Hitachi's won simply because of cost and a relatively cool operating
temperature.

> Have a small 600VA UPS here, I want to plug the ADSL modem,
> POTS modem and my EeePc into

Good idea.

> for we still have regular - irregular power cuts here

Sounds familiar. We've had a series of storms over the last week that have
caused much grief powerwise. One town just south of here had to evacuate
around 300 houses yesterday due to a flash flood. Starting to get Biblical.
:-/

Life is good,
Maurice
