Well I certainly do appreciate it however I've now got
my complier and multimail working.

In fact I discovered the ultimate rescue for CD-ROM disks, DVDs, ect.

I now have a COMPLETE totally functional Slack 12.2 setup
on partition 3.

Despite some advice I've been getting here about the Nvidia
card not possibly being at fault nor tie in before the BIOS
that's happening AGAIN by my stupidly ignoring what I've
seen so I put the card back in AFTER the install on
hda3 then attempted a clean install on hda1.

No go, the Nvidia firmware had created a modification to the new lilo
configured to /hda3 and refused to boot to the CD with install disk 1 again.
Again making that link before the BIOS loaded.

Since the copy on hda3 has never seen that Nvidia card
it still boots just fine withe the onboard card but I cannot
install to hda1 as it fails and falls through to hda3.

Even pulling the card again failed.

But no worries, while I was in hda3 Slack I copied lilio.conf to
lilo.conf.back.

So the lesson here is keep backups to my motherboarded shared memory
lilo.confs and take out the Nvidia card, copy bback the originals
in order to boot to anything in either the floppy or the CD-ROM.

I can apppend that to lilo.conf and correct the problem easily
also altering the labels so I can boot to either after editting out the crud I
mentioned
before that links to the defective Slack on hda1.
Also backed up /etc/fstab for much the same reason.

All in all the system simply WILL NOT BOOT to either a floppy or CD-ROM
with the Nvidia card in there whether or not you install their driver
which I did not.

MK> I am not sure that is a good idea. One of those `be careful what you

Hey, confidence returns here.

Tommorow I reinstall hda1 without errors and have dual boot but then I will
install
the Nvidia after backing up three copies of same.
As is the semigrundged but mostly working Slack on /hda1 will NOT boot
due to my prematurely putting it back in.

MK> No doubt about that here.

 MK> Life is good,

It can be, when I follow my own advice or yours but be wary of unproven sources
of info.
Yeah, I pulled another all nighter.
All I really learned though was that I was absolutely correct in my originnal
assumptions though know I know precisely the mechanism in play
and how to work around it.

Oh yeah and also the best possible way to restore balky CDs that appear to be
ruined
but in fact are not.
Total costs of materials to fix disks?
about 4 dollars and I alreadyhad the stuff on hand and no it is NOT a
commercial
product.
