I now have a booting kernel with a few more fb modules so I can modinfo them
for parameters.  A cut and paste of nvidiafb follows (apologies in advance for
the DOS-think wrapping);

As shown above acceleration is the default.  Not really many choices. Just for

See the above comparison.  I wouldn't blame the linux kernel for the lack of
support.

g200 is the right answer.  ;-)

That will definetly be an issue for the new widescreen flat panels as 24 bit is
the highest supported for most, if not all, of them.  If you have the nvidia
card as the secondary and loaded nvidiafb as a module then something like this
ought to work;

  modprobe nvidiafb bpp=24

If built into the kernel then a proper append line for it forcing the colour
depth will be required.
