Hello All!

I thought I would share a couple of Linux utils I use that deal with file
system events.

Incron

fsniper

Incron, once installed, functions much like a cronjob, except instead of time
based events, the events deal with what is happening in the file system, then
executes whatever command you want it to do based on what type of file system
event you are looking for.

A incrontab looks like so:

<path/Dir to watch> <events to look for> <command to execute>

/home/ross/fvn/flags IN_CREATE /home/ross/fvn/scan

Any file created in "/home/ross/fvn/flags" will trigger the script I specified.

There are many other tests one can put in.

After initial install of incron, one must edit /etc/incron.allow to allow
others besides root to use it.

fsniper

is more narrow minded and mainly looks for created files, its config is stored
in the users home dir:

~/.config/fsniper/config

Watch {

    /home/ross/fvn/flags {

    mailin.flg {

    handler = /home/ross/fvn/scan
  }
 }
}

This particular config is set to watch only one directory and look for the
creation of one specific file, this works quite well, but you can add other
directories to monitor in the cfg and different file type, even using regex.

fsniper can be run as a daemon, which is what I do via a init.d script.

Wayne, incron might be a tool for you to monitor your xorg files, there are
many tests it can run, like IN_ATTRIB, IN_ACCESS, IN_CLOSE_WRITE and many more,
then you can have the system email you or whatever action you want.
