Ah!  Gnome is good for crippling boxes.  Not nearly as good at Windows for
crippling but close enough eh?  Methinks the biggest problem with Gnome is the
networking given the glib dependency.

Very BSD-ish.  Personally I prefer it.

As is I'd agree however it never used to be this way.  If the newbie is serious
about learning about Unixie enviroments then any modern Linux distribution will
be a real pain given the penchant to emulate the more MS-ish enviroment. 
Having said this these days Slackware is still the distro of choice if serious
about learning simply because of ...

Sound exactly like the Atom except it offers ftp.

Ye ol' glib dependency rears it's ugly head again.  glib sucks.  The fact that
hal requires it makes me suspicious of it.  Same with things like the gftp
client in Gnome.  I imagine gstreamer also sucks for this same reason.  Same
for any gtk networking thingy especially web browsers.

Script it.  Just like the old days.  It is still the superior method. If you
need mc then you have never learned how to do things right.

What callers?  As far as I can tell it is only sysops using the local mode of
operations.
