Ärende: it's been no bed of roses
=================================
Hey Wayne!

> Without your assistance it would have taken me years to arrive
> at this point.

I had a bit of an advantage when I started due to never having any real
personal experience with MS software as well as prior Unix experience,
especially with f77 porting and writing manpages for the networked programs
which nobody bothered to document up to then. Baptism by fire as it were. I
taught myself c then. Having said this, it wasn't really much help Linuxie
speaking since I never had to deal with hardware issues and compiling kernels
to run on ye ol' 486 was a real eye opener for me.

> Previously those Linux sites and man pages were like trying to
> read Latin.

That is an understatement. Stinkin' manpages.

> Now I can muddle through on my own.

I hear ya! You're part of the club now.

> You are still the quick fix

:-) I wish I knew then what I know now as I could have been my own
quick fix. I suppose I am now.

> The trip north is off because the woman hasn't shown me the

It looked kind of iffy from this angle. I hate to say this but, probably for
the best.

> This was a Sandisk, reputed to be one of the better brands.

Might have been a knockoff. When they bought out M-Systems they had a chance
at being the best but I think they might have slipped.

> What I meant to inquire was is USB 1.1 hot swappable?

Should be. I have yet to run across one that isn't.

> I've got to go looking for that or download it again as it's

Got a new one there but I'd wait until I am finished playing with kernels. The
stuff there boots both on x86_64 (both 64 and 32) as well as eeepc (32 bit
one). All I have planned at the moment for improving them is to add a few more
hardware drivers, mostly for drives. At the moment it leans a tad heavy
towards Intel chipsets as that is all I have to test things with.

> If you make it available you can be certain I'll download it.

For sure.  As we speak;

----------------------------------------------------------------
root@xena [ ~ ]# du -h /mnt/kvm
1.7G    /mnt/kvm/qemu-images
8.0G    /mnt/kvm/iso
8.0K    /mnt/kvm/etc
4.0K    /mnt/kvm/mnt
278M    /mnt/kvm/boot
16K     /mnt/kvm/lost+found
9.9G    /mnt/kvm
----------------------------------------------------------------

Getting smaller!  :-)

The ttylinux stuff (bootable ramdisks) are in /mnt/kvm/boot. They look like
this;

----------------------------------------------------------------
root@xena [ ~ ]# ls -al /mnt/kvm/boot/ total 284400
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root      4096 Jan 30 11:05 ./
drwxr-xr-x 8 root root      4096 Jan 31 14:29 ../
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root   1836379 Jan 30 10:53 System.map-2.6.32.6-i386
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 268435456 Jan 30 11:02 flash-ttylinux-i386
-rw------- 1 root root     61952 Jan 30 11:05 map
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root  16777216 Jan 30 10:56 ttylinux_ng-i386
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root   3798560 Jan 30 10:57 vmlinuz-2.6.32.6-i386
----------------------------------------------------------------

Only ttylinux_ng-i386 will mount in ram space on the eeepc but then
flash-ttylinux-i386 is loop mountable and can be chrooted into from
ttylinux_ng-i386 to access the good stuff. Loop mounting it makes it more
dynamic anyhow so that doesn't hurt my feelings any.

The qemu-kvm images look like this from the outside;

----------------------------------------------------------------
root@xena [ ~ ]# ls -al /mnt/kvm/qemu-images/ total 1762460
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root       4096 Feb  1 00:36 ./
drwxr-xr-x 8 root root       4096 Jan 31 14:29 ../
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root  353697792 Feb  1 00:41 2thingsInk-i386.qcow2
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 1449525248 Feb  1 00:40 archives.qcow2
----------------------------------------------------------------

while from the inside it looks like this;

----------------------------------------------------------------
root@devo-32:~# df
Filesystem 1K-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on
/dev/hda1              2063504    308548   1650136  16% /
/dev/hdb1              8254240    397636   7437312   6% /mnt/archives
root@devo-32:~#
----------------------------------------------------------------

Cool eh? Got lots of room for growth.

Life is good,
Maurice
