Ärende: there's one for you, nineteen for me
============================================
Hello Maurice.

-> Hey Wayne!
->
-> > It's got a lot of the geeky stuff all mixed up with the GUI
-> > desktop now.
->
-> That is more the KDE developers fault than Slackware's. All the needed
-> cmake/qt crap they figured you'd want.

I'm with you and hate C++ as well, no wonder it's such a butchered effort.
I never could understand the appeal of C++ when C came so easy to me.

C++ was to me vaguely as repulsive as COBOL but to a somewhat lesser
extent.

-> > Plus another three that require Kmag just to read a screen.
->
-> I seem to be headed in that direction. :::sigh:::

Not too bad here yet.
1.5 magnifiers and the 20 inch monitor are fine.

I can still just barely read newsprint but only in natural light outdoors
and that without the cheater lenses.

-> > I guess for setting up others I must now look to other
-> > distributions.
->
-> You're more than likely to see the same issues, perhaps even a few other
-> issues. Maybe not but if I were betting then my bet would be they'd all
likely
-> have issues. Again KDE is KDE no matter what distro.

Well than I'll have a look at Gnome.
The interest as I said is to make this as simple for Windows users to
transition to as possible.

Disabled Windows computer users that is, they're my target because heck
once you get Linux properly setup on decent hardware that's pretty much it,
you're done with few to no further hassles.

I mean with the other stuff some of us have to deal with it's reassuring
to know the computer isn't going to be one of them which with Windows it
constantly was in my experience.

I'm reinstalling tomorrow after eliminating that video card corrupted
lilo.conf but on another partition having backed up everything, then
with the much simpler lilo.conf I'll just add hda3 to hda1 as an alternate
bootable Linux in lilo.

-> > One thing Slack 13 at the desktop level that does do a far
-> > better job is playing videos on demand like Windows users
-> > are accustomed to.
->
-> Right. That has worked in the past and haven't really looked lately to
see if
-> it still does or is better than it used to be. I recall there being
some
-> issues with certain formats but the basic functionality or idea has been
there
-> for some time now.

Basically but often you had to configure it which is cool for the security
risks you can be exposed to otherwise.

My big deal is now being able to watch all the PBS educational Public
Broadcasting online now, NOVA, Frontline, ect.

That and Flash video seems to be on the decline for which I am ever so
grateful.
Soon to rm libflashplayer.so :-)

Even when I bothered to have a television the PBS was virtually the only
stations I watched so no need for an HDTV here :-)

-> > The one super thing is the new kernel, it really does handle my
-> > video card MUCH better.
->
-> Same here. The best so far has been the 2.6.32 branch and so far 2.6.33
hasn't
-> broken anything along that line.
->
-> > startx works as user now too where it didn't for me in 12.2
->
-> That is weird. Always worked here.

Perhaps hardware or BIOS differences?
Worked here as root but never before as user.

Perhaps I simply never chmod'ed the command user?
Has that been required in your experience?

-> > The one disappointment is so far is Multimail-0.49 has failed
-> > to compile on make.
->
-> Try this;
->
-> -----------------------------------------------------------
-> wget
->
http://cdn.debian.net/debian/pool/main/m/multimail/multimail_0.49-2.diff.gz
-> cd mmail-0.49
-> zcat ../multimail_0.49-2.diff.gz | patch -p1 make
-> -----------------------------------------------------------

Oh sure, figures you'd KNOW the answer.
Hey thanks a LOT!

Already saved and on for tomorrow's schedule first thing.

-> Sorry about the truncated wget line above but it cannot be helped. Feel
free to
-> reassemble it into one line. You'll probably see a few warnings from
make but
-> it should compile. Basically the patch brings the source more up to
date with
-> modern gcc (actually g++) distros. The Debian people can get some things
right
-> every now and then. ;-)

Something I am quite grateful for at this moment.

I figured from the error and warning messages that the compiler had tighter
coding requirements so MM went bust, lots about unbracketed else statements
and various other warnings.

I'd seen some of that before but not to this degree, nor had I ever had
make return 1 on Multimail before.

-> > I HATE providing tech support for Windows users, especially
-> > when they DON'T LISTEN and I wind up having to fix the same
-> > thing over and over.
->
-> Understood but that is standard operating procedure with them. Get used
to it
-> or bail out NOW!!! <EG>

I HAVE bailed, last time on a free repeat appearance for THE SAME THING I
feigned ignorance of the problem when in fact I was just tired of this guy
picking up his cell phone and me trekking the 6 blocks to his place and
back for something you'd only have to explain to a six year old once.

Now his wife's power supply is blown.
I told his wife that brand was junk but she rabidly defended it though
they've been my prime tech support problem.

She wants a quick fix for free from me but I can't part with cash I don't
have to buy her a new P.S. when blind services will do so for free.
So she'll do without for a few days or a week.

However long it takes that organization to get someone there.

I DID take over my old working IBM P.S. in case their unit had a 20 pin
motherboard connector I'd have donated it however it was 24 pin.

-> > I need to start charging for these services!
->
-> For sure.
->
-> > Except they're all in similar circumstance to me so I'm an easy
-> > touch for free service calls.
->
-> I hear you.
->
-> > I'm out of coffee :-
->
-> OUCH!!!  That is intolerable.

Darn right that's bad!

I did a gracious thing and assisted someone out financially to the point I
did a real number on myself.
Someone worse off than I.

I knew the coffee was the point that would sting this month.
It did, it does, it is :-(

Oh yeah, ran F-Prot on this cable connected system after ten months
online and came up empty again.

In ALL the three and a half years I've run Linux, one logic bomb detected
and deleted before it executed and one virus and that was only there due to
it being an MBR infector and I had a second drive with Windows on it it
migrated from.
