Ärende: we'd all love to see the plan
=====================================
Hello Maurice!

-> > I'm with you and hate C++ as well
->
-> I don't hate it but have discovered over the years most of what I want
and find
-> extremely useful is written in straight c. When I first *had* to learn
c I
-> wasn't all that enamoured with it. It took many years before I saw the
-> light.

I took to it in about 5 days and wrote a totally functional 800 line
program with it in a day on one occasion after about 40 days with it.

Loved the bitwise operators and the handling of multidimensional arrays.

-> I even wrote most of what ended up on my home based PC - a 386 with a
whopping
-> 16M drive and 2M of ram - all in straight c.

Way to go!

-> Even wrote a 'BBS', which was more of an online database then a
Fido-like BBS
-> but operationally was very BBS-ish, so that I could upload code (mostly)
from a
-> remote.

I LIKE the idea of a database approach.

-> It became a statistical door thingy on a real BBS later on that could
-> generate random numbers based on certain criteria (weighted averages).
I think
-> the sysop there REALLY wanted it to generate lottery numbers for himself
based
-> on historical winning numbers. Beats me if it ever paid off for him. I

Quite unlikely, if it worked that way we'd all hit the powerball lottery.
I DID once write a clunky but functional Greyhound racing handicapping
program in tiny basic on a Timex Sinclair full of nested for - next loops.

It worked because I used my own handicapping ideas.
Only drawback?
I averaged about $2.10 cents an hour spent at the track, working was far
more profitable.
Unless you count the LAST day I ever went, four trifectas in a row and out
the door with $4,200 after taxes!

-> learned quite a bit about networking over phone lines from it all.
->
-> So far g++ has only been useful for some multimedia apps ... and of
course GUI
-> crap.
->
-> > 1.5 magnifiers and the 20 inch monitor are fine.
->
-> I am using the kernel's SUN12x22 fonts on a 17" monitor with no need for
-> magnification.  Requires a lilo append line that looks like;
->
-> append = "fbcon=font:SUN12x22"

I was actually aware of the syntax due to the d**ned Nvidia mod to
lilo.conf where it put in a similar line, for what was the Linux default in
the first place!

But thanks for the tip as I'll check that particular font out.
Actually at the command line with the magnifying glasses I prefer a smaller
font, either way I'll play with it.

-> I highly recommend it.
->
-> > Well than I'll have a look at Gnome.
->
-> That might help out with the office stuff since you'll probably need
some of
-> the gnome libs which I believe are already included with Slackware but
not the
-> whole enchelada.

No big deal, I can deal with that sort of stuff from having run up against
it numerous times.

-> > My big deal is now being able to watch all the PBS educational
-> > Public Broadcasting online now, NOVA, Frontline, ect.
->
-> A capture card on cable will work.

Hey, I'm not even paying the basic $10 addition to my internet cable rate
for basic cable local stations, that's a month's worth of coffee!

No television here at all though two work, no converter box nor plans for
any.
Waste of time, PBS excepted IMO.

-> -> That is weird. Always worked here.
->
-> > Worked here as root but never before as user.
->
-> AH! Yeah edit /etc/group and give yourself access to at least video and
audio
-> groups.  For example mine says;
->
-> -----------------------------------------------------------
-> audio:x:17:root,maurice
-> video:x:18:root,maurice
-> -----------------------------------------------------------

Hey what do I know, it's automated in Slack 13's install, it queries if you
want to give the user that use the page up - down to select.
However it IS a tip I shall (have) made a note of.

-> Also gave myself some access to some other groups but the above should
be the
-> minimum for xorg.

Like I said, automated in Slack 13.0.
Way too much is automated for my tastes and the default for the KDE GUI
turned out to be save minimized apps to load on the next boot :-(
That plus they aren't shown in the task bar.

I briefly checked out Fluxbox yesterday and that looks better.
Pretty basic but upgradable to taste with none of the newest KDE crap
thrown in.

Actually I'm in KDE now since I've reset loads of defaults but it's still
the pits IMO in this incarnation.

Fluxbox seems to load the CPU and memory the least of any of the GUI's I've
tried thus far.

I'll just have to give it some more attention
