Hey Maurice!

I expressed myself poorly.
By eliminating all the junk the GUI loads up I'm maximising the system's
usefulness.
I can run more apps without topping out the CPU and gained substantial headroom

Who needs the GUI system monitor when you've got top?
So I eliminated it.
BTW _system monitor_ sucks up 44 meg of real memory and 30 swap when invoked.
When you've only got 384 - 64 for the video card...

I may try putting CUPS back in because I need to test out some of these
printers I've accumulated from the law office next door when they upgraded.

I cannot entirely free myself from that unfortunately as my ISP Bright House
Networks requires it to log onto their web page to do the monthly banking
transfer
to pay the account.
The same with their clunky mail server going through their web page though it's
no problem going through kmail.
No, I've not setup mutt yet.

Hopefully that tutorial covers that as well, if not I'll google for examples.

 MK> Excellent idea.

 MK> No surprise here.

MK> For sure. It took me many years to get to that stage. Definetly worth
 MK> all the effort though.

What effort?
Came easily.
Like I say I operate sporatically, dumbfounded often then I've streaks where
nothing or near nothing fails on the first attempt.

I had such a couple of hours when I freed up all that real memory.

 > Same 440BX chipset

MK> Good support for it. Has been for quite some time now.

Excellent support I'd say.
Excepting that nightmare second video card Slack installs without a single
glitch.
No it wasn't in when I installed 13.0 but unfortunately I left lilo.conf as a
template in thinking I'd commented out all the crud the Nvidia card put in
there but obviously missed something.

No big deal, install to any of my seven other partitions, copy over everything
from home and my software downloads directory then do the same to hda3 where
thisreinstall is after mkfs -t ext3 /dev/hda3 wipes it.

Every install I do is cleaner and tighter which besides giving me redundancy
also preserves everything should something go awry.

Which is ALSO why I've separate labels in lilo to mount only one Linux
partition and swap at a time based upon my selection.

All I really lost a few months ago when following bad advice was my bookmarks
in firefox and I've recreated most of them.

Twas a shame though as they were primarily educational sites and entertainment,
political sites, not so much anymore.

Here I was using Firebirds upgrade downloads that install below /home/user
when all this time I had just need go to www.slackware.org, find a fast
download site and wget the newest source from the ap series, or is that apx, no
matter, it's dead simple to navigate using links.

And now with this kernel that card isn't even needed, wouldn't have been in the
first place had I not needed to free up memory, now I've done that a far better
way.

The redirect knowledge I seek is primarily aimed at getting all my apps to
function at the commmand line and eliminate the GUI entirely.
Hopefully in a years time I can make that happen and not even install them.

Excellent tutorial and I'm already quite comfortable with xz, dead simple.

And no, I certainly didn't look up that in the tutorial, xz --help was more
than sufficient.

I need to discipline myself to at least an hour on that tutorial a day.
Love all the examples!

They really are accelerating my learning significantly.
