I a while back was thinking of rolling my own.
There's a thrift shop nearby that has an inexpensive car stereo amplifier
booster with a heavy
amperage laminated core torroid in it that would be ideal for this purpose.

Just rewind the core to match the output of an _existing_ normal 120V power
supply
to output the proper voltages and substitute it for the existing torroid in a
conventional power supply
and you're done and ready to operate off of 12 volts.

Just throw out all the circutry after the torroid but keep the huge heat sink
the driver
transistors are on and hook that bad boys output up to the existing
conventional supplies voltage regulators.

I figure at the claimed rated output the output windings are the ones needing
rewinding as at the claimed power
output they'd have to be plus and minus 40 - 45 volts at the rails

Really a trivial project.

I strongly expect the resulting power supply would easily drive a quad core CPU
box and if I were really
ambitious I could redesign the driver circuitry to be even more efficient since
this is an old unit and
a power FET driver circuitry would be far more efficient and require much less
heat sink.

Could well manage my old box as well with one hard drive and a CD-ROM as it was
getting by fine with just the 145 watt
unit before I added the second hard drive and a 350 watt used power supply
in anticipation of upgrading to a dual core AMD which will also come in under
the wire.

Why so much?
I've been looking into these things a bit and some users are reporting 7
maximum watt draw.
Though I'm not certain it's the same CPU.
Something like 2 - 3 watts idle.

Of course they're also using some strange, to me, power saving mods to Linux.
One guy's completely off the grid with a smallish battery and a 12 watt solar
panel.

I had to look that one up though you've been mentioning it quite a lot.
I like it.
I wonder if it's good enough of a driver to have improved on the Nvida that's
going to be supported in kernel
2.6.33?

Doubt it, that card was crud.
Couldn't even handle 1024x768
apparently this inteldrm driver is exceptional on switching resolutions on the
fly?

MK> Works great on both the console

That xorg issue was mentioned as a challenge in my brief research before
responding to this post.
Apparently you have to have that dead on first.

 MK> Life is good,

Would be if I WEREN'T OUT OF COFFEE.
Never realized how addicted I was to the stuff.

Well I've backed up all my downloads on drive 2 partition three so I'm going to
do yet ANOTHER reinstallation just
to make some customised changes I've made perform even better.

But not before installing on /hdb1 and getting that one properly configured.
Five hours tops as this kernel speeds everything up even on this old clunker,
2.6.29 kernel

This time I'm going to modify the rc.modules first and then compile kernel
2.6.33 when it comes out.

No more ordering CD's eiither, just download the ISO's because they WORK now
the Nvidia and the havoc
it wrought is now GONE.

2.6.33 is supposed to have an improved inteldrm also, in fact Linus T himself
said he wanted inteldrm incorporated
into the kernel instead of just being a driver, or such was reported anyway.

I installed ffmpeg this morning as it's supposed to be THE thing for converting
video files to various formats, fast
they claim but I've not yet really looked into the syntax in the docs
subdirectory, doesn't look all that complex.

Pretty similar to mplayer syntax for encoding in fact.

... Now running Slackware 13.0
