Ärende: teenage wasted
======================
On or about 04-01-10 13:54, WAYNE CHIRNSIDE allegedly uttered "Re: teenage
wasteland" to JAMES BRADLEY:

 WC> about 19777 Meg each with a 768M swap on hda2 and a 512 on hdb2.
WC> Neither have seen much if any action with this kernel.

JB> mdadmin a common swap across the two, and you can almost double its
 JB> speed.

WC> I had that for a time and noticed no speedup at all however
WC> with the kernel in slack 13.0 2.6.29.6 the swap file hardly ever sees
WC> any use at all compared to the kernel shipped with Slack 12.2.

SATA??? Maybe the bus is saturated by reading one drive? I have a SCSI system
that has SW RAIDs (5?) across six drives, and it perks things up nicely. I then
butt up against the PCI bottleneck, but it *is* slick compared to IDE.

I seem to recal MK writing, each SATA channel (Hence drive.) has its own DMA.
<scratching head>

JB> There is no real need for two individual ones, like dual booting
JB> with Winders/GNU-*nix. I read an article back in the day when IDE had
JB> yet to be referred to as PATA, that often accessed partitions could be
JB> placed at the start of a drive to reduce the seek-time. Fer instance,

 WC> Ok, now that's a useful tidbit.

Saves the actuators too! <L>

WC> Compiling the 2.6.33.1 kernel awaits coffee on Friday so

JB> That makes it compile faster? <G+D>

WC> It make Wayne faster due to the seditive I take at night to sleep.
WC> Takes out the groggies first thing in the morning.

Right after the bitchy cat is let out to chase away magpies, a grog of espresso
is next on my morning agenda.

WC> Well I'd want 768x1024 resolution native on an LCD/TFT is when
WC> eventially I have to pop for one and dispite some looking haven't seen
 WC> one yet.

Portrait? That's a pretty low spec, even if you do prop it on its side.
<chuckle> Any reason why you aim so low?

 JB> ___ MultiMail/Linux v0.49

WC> Hey James as presumably you telnet into a Maximus BBS can you tip me
WC> off to the commmands you use to upload and download binaries like QWK
 WC> files?

Can't help you there. I use the POTS line to dial up the Max BBS. From there,
zmodem just works.

WC> I'm trying to telnet into a Maximus BBS and can write online but
WC> uploads of bbs.qwk files and downloads of bbs.qwk files eludes me.

WC> I just don't know how to issue the command to receive one the qwk is
WC> packed and asked to download which is where it hangs and I have to
 WC> CNTRL - X several times
WC> to end the attempt and logout.

It sounds like the host has the file queued for your attention, but your
application needs to give the "All's clear"? Is the host configured to send to
you with what transfer protocol? X,Y+Z modem/Kermit/... are all geared toward
DUN, so I doubt you'd even *want* them in your way when you call in via TCP/IP.
There's a Bluewave and Offline echo where the people use it all the time, and I
*know* some of them use Docs regularly.

... Phonics (fo'nex)
___ MultiMail/Linux v0.49

PPS: I just ran through multimail's doc directory, and "modemu" might be what
you are looking for, for your Telnet-DL/UL situation. It sounds like you run
your Telnet client, then minicom with modemu to handle RTS-CTS negotiations.
Sounds convoluted to me, but... I could send someone from the BLUEWAVE/OFFLINE
echo here, if you don't have the echos there. <?>
