No but I know a few people who have and also I used to find their howto's most
interesting.  Some of the commandlines and a few build scripts I use have been
influenced by Gentoo.

Maybe.  At the moment I am still learning to minimalize and optimize which
seems to be amongst the miniority these days, especially using more cutting
edge source such as the latest gcc release.

:-)  Yeah I've never been a fan of Debian.  As for Ubuntu I can't say I
agree with their choice of eglibc given that they're probably the most bloated
of GNU-Linux distributions these days and that eglibc seems more of an embedded
thing where a disto like Ubuntu would be vast overkill and unlikely to even
work on a typical embedded device.  I am not sure Debian has really committed
to that silly idea yet other than their more experimental releases.

Possibly qemu-kvm but I never tried it since I never bothered with actually
displaying what was running in the virtual space.  I just put on a minimalized
32 bit 2thingsInk enviroment and used tun/tap to ssh into it.  Also tried the
last 2.4 kernel release of Slackware just to see what I could get away with. 
It worked but like I said it was daemonized network thing rather than running
displayed in a terminal or window like most tend to do.  From my understanding
some people claim to have Win7 running that way.

Personally I find chrooting to be more useful despite the fact that it can only
be Linux.  That works out best methinks.  Also I have nothing to cross compile
for so that isn't an issue at the moment.  My first attempt at building a 64
bit enviroment was from a SMP P3 system that couldn't chroot to it, but it did
boot up to an AMD64 later on.  Everything running now sprung from that original
build.  That was a painful experience and at the time I swore, "Never again!" 
As luck has it, either 64 bit AMD's or Intels can chroot to a pure 32 bit
enviroment and target a 32 bit x86 cpu so this has become the boot/root of
choice now.

Understood.  However I'd like to believe that life itself is good no matter
what and that it doesn't depend on who or where.  I think people who claim life
have it backwards, nevermind whether their particular existance is good ... or
not.
