 RC> Hello WAYNE!

 RC> 21 Apr 10 15:29, you wrote to me:

WC>> He starts out with Linux and then customises his own
WC>> "Phoenix" release which in most all regards behaves like Windows,
WC>> only without the wide assortment of problems.

 RC>> Ergo, he copied Xandros...

WC> And your supporting evidence for this claim is?

RC> I didnt mean it negatively.. I should have elaborated better.

RC> Xandros made no secret that their distro was aimed at being as Windows
RC> like as possible, in order to lure Windows weanies away from M$.

Too flashy for my tastes, same sort of crud pushed me off of Slack 13.0
KDE desktop to Fluxbox.

RC> I tried out Xandros, came stock with an extremely bloated and
RC> customised KDE, that was real real close to being Windows like and
RC> included Crossover/Wine, that would at the time, let one even download
RC> and install Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.

RC> I am sure your local dealer does something similiar..

WC> Actually the man is doing rather well in his business enterprise.

RC> I am sure he is and is on the right track if Linux is what he prefers
 RC> to peddle.

It is.

WC> I looked at Xandros, didn't like what I saw.

RC> 1. KDE was bloated worse than a beached rotting whale carcus in the
 RC> summertime.

So too in Slack 13.0 which is why I no longer use KDE.

RC> 2. Their update mechanisms sucked, when compared to Ubuntu, Red Hat,
 RC> Suse et al.

Update?
I just use pkgtool here after snagging the current files or patch indicated
files
per the listings at slackware.org

 RC> 3. Payware..

WC> Personally I think offering a superior product to market for
WC> 1/2 the price of a Windows box that satisfies the market's
WC> thirst for the familiar *looking* O.S. AKA Windows a rather astute
 WC> business decision.

RC> That is correct, and is what I debated Maurice on many moons ago..

RC> The geek to newbie ratio in computers is far more off balance than it
RC> used to be, there are more newbies now.

WC> As to my equipment dating to 1998 it meets most all my needs quite
WC> well thank you very much.
 RC> [..]

RC> Windows is a hardware intensive OS, moreso now than then, but the
RC> hardware in the 90's is not a fair measure of Windows today.

Is to ME.

To each their own, I dispise Windows now that I'm where it's at.

RC> I have people all the time, bringing in machines that originally ran
RC> Windows 98 or ME, to which they put XP on it and did not upgrade the
RC> memory and wonder why it is slow, or even crashing.. I make no denials
RC> that Windows is a hawg..

I've pushed several friends to upgrade RAM on their Win XP boxes, invariably
they had no idea this was the economy speedup shortcut.

No one in my limited local circle using Vista or 7 yet.

RC> Windows ME and VISTA are the abhorrations of recent MS past.. Albeit
RC> Vista doesnt totally deserve all of the press it has gotten.

They lost me at 95 and 98 as soon as Maurice introduced me to Slackware and I
also
immediately dumped Debian based Knoppix as well.

RC> But alot of the problems people have had with windows has more to do
RC> with under-powering it and then with the switch from the DOS Kernel to
RC> the NT KErnel, people expecting DOS apps to function as if nothing has
RC> changed (mixing in some ignorance from newbies)

RC> Windows 7 is a darn good improvement, I have 2 boxes and one netbook
RC> running it. Intel Core i7 processor, 8gb of ram, 1 tb hdd.. etc.

 RC> Not underpowered here.

RC> My linux box does quite well on a dual core AMD chip with 3 gb ram.
RC> Boots up faster than any of the Winder boxes.. I get to have the best
 RC> of both worlds.

My initial target is dual core AMD 64 and 2 GB RAM.
Economy class.
On the cheap, like just under $200 for a Compusa package deal either Biostar or
MSI, CPU - motherboard - fan bundled and the RAM included in the $200 - 210
micro-ATX, later preferably a full ATX motherboard for all the advantages and
extras.

Gotta start with attainable goals thus micro-ATX at a savings of $40 but
limited
port and slot options, later all the bells and whistles.
