If you wanted to get fancy the script up a tad you could do this instead;

  find ~/your-qwk-dir/ -perm 444 -exec chmod -v 644 {} \;

The above finds all files in a specfic directory (and any subdirectories if
there are any) with the permissions of 444 (read only) and automagically resets
them to 644 which is read/write for owner and read for everyone else.

It gives the numerics for uid/gid and in this case that is 0 and 0 which
corresponds to user root and group root as shown in /etc/passwd. In my case as
user maurice that would have been 1000 100.

Note that the permission is 644 owner maurice (1000) and group users (100) as
per /etc/groups.  Also note the entry for the dialout group; dialout:x:16:uucp.
 If maurice needs dialout access to the modem then as user root I'd edit the
/etc/groups dialout entry to read dialout:x:16:uucp,maurice which will readily
solve that problem or it should if udev created the correct permissions for
serial ports.

You mean chmod.  chown is used to change ownership while chmod changes
permissions.

Not in this case.  Multimail run as the user requires read/write permissions. 
Try downloading as a regular user instead of user root and see if there is a
difference.  Your bash script run as user root has potential for disaster for
ALL.  I believe the group dialout has access so if your user belongs to that
group then minicom should work. If I recall correctly the directory for
downloaded offline packets is ~/mm/down and then the find commandline as the
user should be;

  find ~/mm/down/ -perm 444 -exec chmod -v 644 {} \;
