RAID 5... Now your making me jealous! <L>

My P!!! SMP used to HW RAID 5, (A botched firware update "fixed" that.)
but this new box only houses two SCSI drives, and as much as I've read on it -
even if I plug in an external enclosure - will only RAID to 1, or something
called 1E. <Don't ask me! B-> The plan now is to toss the P!!!, upgrade the
SCSI controller on the Xeons and tack on a SCSI enclosure. We'll see how kind
the auctioneer is going to be tonight. <L>

PS: He kept them for himself! Greedy bugger. <L>

Sacrilege, that you mentioned the OS *twice!*

JB> He also wrote that this rule starts to become overkill

BP> overkill is when there is 4GB swap and newer used one single byte in it

Well... The plan is to have it serve and node some video. Because I'm far from
being Captain CL, I'll likely be running a GUI at times on it too, but time
will tell how much face-time it will get. Chances *are* slim, that it will
process much.

BP> eg if you have 5 harddisks, make a swap partion on each,
BP> and make 5 swap lines in fstab, got it ? :)

I never knew that could happen! I have RAIDed five together for a swap,
(Actually, on the P!!! that is being denigrated.) but never ran it much. I
suspect the RAID control would trump the multi-partition method?

PS: Shouldn't a HW SATA RAID show up as /dev/sd[]? An Sil controller doesn't
seem to be sending (c)fdisk the message that it is there.

BP> btw linux supports swapfile just like windows does can be
BP> handy in linux if one have small harddisks where swap is
 BP> fairly not needed.

Now, you mentioned it THRICE!!! "Lash Benny to the yardarm."

Could you explain what you mean by "Linux supports swapfile"? I've understood
it more of a memory dump when system RAM is needed by other things. Oh...
Because *everything* in *NIX is a file?

JB> Sheesh... I remember when *32M* of RAM made you the envy of the
 JB> neighbourhood!

BP> yep i could try add MEM=32M to my kernel line in grub.conf
BP> if need to test swap :=)

Ya... grub isn't here for me to look it up, so if you say so. <G>

 JB> ... -rw-rw-rw- : File permission of the beast.

BP> for worms in the internet to share files ?

[-|{ For those unwary, yes!

... Will that be cache or chkdsk?
