There's a lot about the booting process I don't yet understand.
Grub seems to be much less "screwed to the wall" than others.
You can go into command mode and boot from just about wherever
you want, it seems.

grub> root (hdX,Y)      tells it which drive/partition to look on
grub> kernel [path]filename   points to the kernel, and if "Y" is
the /boot file system, [path] isn't required
grub> boot              let 'er rip

And I rescued my new drive using a boot floppy made for a
different system.  I think I could have used it to boot from the
new drive when it was on the secondary IDE controller (hdc1),
after I repaired fstab, if it weren't for the fact that would
upset a lot of stuff in init.

Because I did change the layout and edited /etc/fstab when I
THOUGHT I was editing /mnt/hd/etc/fstab.

Booting from a grub floppy doesn't require the kernel to be on it!

At the time I THOUGHT the old system was still bootable.  Then I
HAD to boot the new one with the unclean fs, and needing the grub
boot loader installed, but otherwise was ready to go.

The kpx3.6 I just got has bad copies of KNOPPIX/KNOPPIX.  8-(
