Ärende: Mail Reader
===================
Good ${greeting_time}, Allie!

Now the most common FTN triple-pack (mailer, tosser, reader) for Linux includes
binkd, hpt and golded+.

They are quite simple to build and install. First of all, download them:

wget 'http://husky.cvs.sf.net/viewvc/husky/huskylib/?view=tar' -O
huskylib.tar.gz

wget 'http://husky.cvs.sf.net/viewvc/husky/smapi/?view=tar' -O smapi.tar.gz

wget 'http://husky.cvs.sf.net/viewvc/husky/fidoconf/?view=tar' -O
fidoconf.tar.gz

wget 'http://husky.cvs.sf.net/viewvc/husky/areafix/?view=tar' -O areafix.tar.gz

wget 'http://husky.cvs.sf.net/viewvc/husky/hpt/?view=tar' -O hpt.tar.gz

wget 'http://golded-plus.cvs.sf.net/viewvc/golded-plus/golded+/?view=tar' -O
golded+.tar.gz

The huskylib, smapi, fidoconf, areafix and hpt packages are parts of Husky
Project. The golded+ is a solid reader&editor package. For binkd, getting it
from the development CVS is recommended:

cvs -z3 -d:pserver:binkd@cvs.happy.kiev.ua:/cvs checkout -P binkd

If you are using RPM-based distribution (CentOS, Fedora etc.), you can build
native packages and install it for all possible users on your machine (so each
user will have their own set of configuration files and messagebases) - that's
very simple. First of all, prepare the build environment (unless you didn't do
that earlier):

mkdir -m 750 -p ~/.rpm.d/{BUILD,ROOT,RPMS,SOURCES,SPECS,SRPMS}
echo %_topdir ~/.rpm.d > ~/.rpmmacros

Then, run rpmbuild pointing it to source tarballs (they have .spec files
inside):

tar -czf binkd.tar.gz binkd && rm -rf binkd
rpmbuild -ta binkd.tar.gz

And install the freshly-built packages (example for x86-32, "sudo" is used to
aquire the root privileges):

sudo rpm -Uvh ~/.rpm.d/RPMS/i386/binkd*.rpm

Repeat the above steps for all other packages:

rpmbuild -ta huskylib.tar.gz
sudo rpm -Uvh ~/.rpm.d/RPMS/i386/huskylib*.rpm

rpmbuild -ta smapi.tar.gz
sudo rpm -Uvh ~/.rpm.d/RPMS/i386/smapi*.rpm

rpmbuild -ta fidoconf.tar.gz
sudo rpm -Uvh ~/.rpm.d/RPMS/i386/fidoconf*.rpm

rpmbuild -ta areafix.tar.gz
sudo rpm -Uvh ~/.rpm.d/RPMS/i386/areafix*.rpm

rpmbuild -ta hpt.tar.gz
sudo rpm -Uvh ~/.rpm.d/RPMS/i386/hpt*.rpm

rpmbuild -ta golded+.tar.gz
sudo rpm -Uvh ~/.rpm.d/RPMS/i386/golded+*.rpm

In order to build packages for other distributions, see package building
instructions for your system.

Now, you should have all the packages built and installed, so it's time to
configure them. The easiest way to do that is running the "fidosetup" script:

sudo rpm -Uvh
ftp://home.gremlin.ru/pub/linux/RPMS.noarch/fidosetup-1.2-g1.noarch.rpm

fidosetup

The following will appear in your terminal:

http://gremlin.ru/fido/fidosetup/fidosetup.png

You'll need your Fidonet address, your uplink address and session password.
Enter all the parameters, press "generate" - and the script will create
known-good default configuration files at the selected directory. Be careful:
the script won't ask you for overwriting existing files, if there are any!

Also, it will print out some lines which you can add to your crontab - that's
recommended, but not necessary (you can perform all those tasks manually).

After that, you'll have simply run

golded

... and write your first offline netmail message - most likely it will be the
test message to your uplink node sysop or a echoarea subscription request to
AreaFix.
