Good idea.  Graphical kernel support is best.  One of these days I need to
check out an ATI card wrt kernel framebuffers as they are most common in this
part of the world.

That could be from conflicting modules.  Usually the easiest way to resolve
this without building a new kernel is to blacklist the module(s) you don't want
it to inadvertantly autodetect and load.  This kind of thing happens most often
with usb devices these days.

Interesting.  I'd definetly recommend using the kernel's SUN12X22 font and a
low screen resolution dependent on the monitor's screen size. 16bpp
framebuffered graphics ought to be ample.  On a large screen you might get away
with 800x600 and he could potentially read it but sometimes 640x480 is the way
to go but the large fonts might screw up things like mc at that resolution.  If
he can get away with 800x600 or larger than that is best all things considered.
 The links browser ought to be the best - even graphically - for his needs even
in xorg. Other than the phoney-baloney so-called java crap out there it should
be able to render readable text.  Any worthy web site should be okay for his
particular cause.

Speaking of purely console based GNU-Linux, I just finished editting the build
scripts I am using with the urls of where the source can be obtained. 
Currently the build scripts use the onboard source tarballs but I thought they
were a good place to comment out where they were originally obtained.  Also
decided to put aside the newer GUI based version - I call it Crowbait - until
the Mozilla people catch up to the gcc people.  Besides the console based
thingy - aka 2thingsInk - works as is with the new gcc-4.6.0 and for fun threw
in both g++ and gfortran although little to nothing currently requires either.
