It should just be a log-out from your main account to the log-in prompt, and
login to the created account.  (There are ways of using other accounts from
your main one but let's keep it simple.)

I don't think you can as it's not the Ubuntu 'way'.  If you have the time then

I do all my checkouts in a vBox these days.  Next on the list is the latest
Debian .iso file I downloaded...

The more the merrier.  Ah, yes.  A good choice.

I have 4Gb on my main PC downstairs running 5x vBox-ed PCs using about 1.3Gb
(using various OSes).  512Mb is fine for a U'u vBox; the minimum is 384Mb, I
think.

Oooh, that's a worry.  ;-)

It's easy: U'u owns everything, and vBox inherits what U'u allows it through
'group' access levels (don't worry, it's automatic).  On a typical vBox task
window the Devices-->USB Devices menu option ought to be loaded with the
Thumbdrive's hardware details next to a tick-box; click on the tick-box to make
it available to the running vBox.  (Untick it later when you're done with it;
remember to un-mount it from the U'u desktop.)

It should work.  Look for a menu doover called something like 'File Manager',
find the archive & double-left-click on it.  After that it's up to you... it
works like that ZIP-tool Windows thingy that I keep forgetting the name of (but
it tends to create a sub-directory off the target dir that you select - yurk).

Remember, 'unzip' by itself gives a help listing.
