I have been running for something over a year now with a router/firewall that's
built into a 386dx40 w/20M of ram and an 80M HD.  It's running Slackware
version 8.  I don't remember what exactly I had to do to set it up, but
basically I got very choosy during the install,  and then went through
afterwards and ripped out a whole lot of things that I figured I wouldn't need.
 Then I set up the firewall according to the HOWTO,  which if you want it you
can get at the linux documentation project (ldp.org?).  The only trouble I have
with it is that for some reason I haven't nailed down exactly why it is that
SSH still asks me for a password when I first log into that box,  my placement
of the key info files on that box should have taken care of it but it didn't. 
Only other problem I have is that when we lose power for some reason (during a
thunderstorm for example) that box is the slowest one to boot.  Heck,  it's the
slowest machine here!  But looking at things as they operate there shows me a
system load factor that never seems to go over 0.2, no matter how active I'm
getting,  which can at times include email, http, and nntp all at the same
time.  Yeah,  that's a lot for a dialup but I like to keep that pipe full.  :-)

The only activity that could have any effect on filling up that drive is
logging,  and that hasn't done so yet either -- the drive is something like 68%
full,  and has stayed pretty near that for a long time.

If you want another alternative to look at,  there's IPCOP,  which I have here.
 It offers a lot,  but I haven't seen the need for some of what it offers to
the extent of actually wanting to install it just yet.

If there are specific points you're having difficulty with and I can answer any
questions,  I'll be glad to help you get that going...
