Ärende: software for linspire
=============================

Hello Martin -

MA>> I haven't got Linspire but i do have an inquiring mind.
MA>> This of course is a bonus if you enjoy using Linux. Could
MA>> i prevail upon you to also send me the information please.

CA>> I'm guessing that you already know this but it might be
CA>> worth pointing out to non-programmers that want to _use_
CA>> the Linspire install longer than the time it takes to
CA>> locate another 'distro' to install that using apt-get
CA>> might trash the OS?

MA> I have never used Debian,

Linspire is not Debian, it originated from Debian code
(apparently). Not being truly 'debian' means that binaries
mixed into a Linspire install my cause problems (dependencies
etc.).

MA> my systems are Redhat or Mandrake(Mandriva). I could
MA> subscribe to Mandrake and upgrade via something called CVS.
MA> I prefer to just find anything i want on the net, RPM if
MA> possible but the source code is ok for me. Others may not
MA> share my confidence and prefer the security of subscribing.

The people using the Win95 echo who downloaded the free
Linspire OS are not programmers and have no knowledge of
recompiling source code for a linux installed OS. They intend
to mix Debian binaries with Linspire binaries.

MA> The point is i am doing nothing wrong. I get my upgrades
MA> via magazines and have my own collection of RPMs and
MA> sources on one of my remote servers. It suits me to do it
MA> this way. Does this stop Mandriva from earning a crust?
MA> Does this make me a free loader?

As much a free loader as I might be using a BBS that asks for
'donations' (which are supposed to be optional) and not making
a 'donation'.

CA>> A quote from one source:

CA>> "You are NOT required to subscribe to CNR. You can use
CA>> apt-get with Debian repositories if you desire, but you
CA>> can't use both CNR and apt-get, as using apt-get will
CA>> eventually break CNR and could hose your system. Using
CA>> apt-get will also eventually turn your Linspire system
CA>> more into a pure Debian system than Linspire OS."

MA> Hosing the system is a risk some may be willing to take. If
MA> a subscriber feels comfortable enough to go cut the
MA> Linspire umbilical cord and go pure Debian, does that make
MA> them free loaders, are they wrongly depriving the Linspire
MA> team of their income? Their original distro came via
MA> Linspire but they have decided to do things their own way.
MA> Does it matter where they get their updates from?

Linspire was generous enough to offer a free copy of the OS and
was 'repaid' for that generosity when one of the people
recommended not paying even the $20 for access to 2000 software
packages tailored for that OS. I would say under the
circumstances that attitude is a bit vulgar.

CA>> It was also pointed out that CNR automatically points the
CA>> user to the proper binaries for their _version_ of the
CA>> Linspire OS so that if Linspire goes to v6 at some point
CA>> those with the FREE v5 could continue to add software by
CA>> using CNR rather than apt-get from Debian's repositories.

MA> We are both slightly in the dark but surely the Linspire
MA> team could give subscribers password authentication. If
MA> they don't re-subscribe then their account expires.

True.

This discussion of where/how to add to the Linspire install
began because the offer to 'bypass CNR' appeared to be a way to
hack into Linspire's paid-for repositories. It wasn't until I
called the person on it that he elaborated explaining he was
directing people to Debian's repositories which are not paid
for. Not typing what you are thinking can confuse people who
can only read what you type.

Given that the 'plan' is to raid Debian's resources it is not
stealing but reading the FAQ files at Linspire warns that you
_may_ trash the OS and will most certainly diable CNR for any
future use should you change your mind and want the version
checking and other conveniences CNR offers (reduced costs for
commercial software packages etc.).

Again, this is about mixing binaries not recompiling source
code. A completely different situation to what you describe for
yourself (using source code).
