Hello Maurice -

CA>> Networking is something I never bothered to do. I didn't
CA>> create large files (programming). I've never written a
CA>> Windows GUI application so everything I've done is
CA>> comparatively smaller both source and binaries and easilly
CA>> moved from one machine to another via transfers over a
CA>> null parallel cable or a floppy.

MK> Right except in my case that wasn't doable given the target
MK> was a Sparc station which at that time was totally removed
MK> compatibility-wise from my 386. I recall jumping through
MK> far too many hoops to make that DOS bax behave more Unixie.
MK> I don't miss those daze whatsoever no matter how bored I
MK> get.

I tried a few of the DOS/Unix packages but they really couldn't
do much of anything. I did get some rewritten UNIX utilities
and use those with DOS though.

CA>> As I've said, I've always been 'online' even before the
CA>> www. :-)

MK> Me too. I recall attending a seminar when they were first
MK> bringing the www online and wasn't all that enamoured with
MK> the idea then. Funny thing is I am still not any more
MK> enamoured with it despite all the changes since.
MK> Occasionally it is okay but overall I could live without
MK> 99% of what is there without shedding a tear.

Before Yahoo! and Google people were recommending that the user
could just guess at the domain names and 'find' things somewhat
at random. That sounded like a huge time-waster to me. My 2nd
oldest daughter signed me up for an ISP to win a contest at
her work and I decided to see what I could do with it. Took me
awhile to locate DOS apps for connection to the internet but I
finally did get online mainly using MSKermit then finally
switched to W31 and Opera's browser.

CA>> I fought using any type of GUI until the wife of a
CA>> professor insisted I should install MSWord for word
CA>> processing and gave me all the install floppies. They sat
CA>> around the house for 6 months or so then I got bored and
CA>> installed them.

MK> Never happened here. In fact it was an math prof friend of
MK> mine who convinced me that I should be using Slackware. The
MK> first time he saw it he thought it would be my cup of tea.
MK> He was right.

I was that close. If someone had given me Slackware CDs I'd
probably have been using linux all this time. :-)

CA>> I was reading a 'blog' entry from the guy who bankrolled
CA>> Ubuntu explaining why it uses gcc4 which makes it's
CA>> binaries incompatible with other Debian forks.

MK> Not an issue here with Slackware. It works for me.

CA>> After many years witnessing the 'battle' between those who
CA>> used MS 'C' compiler and those using Borland's 'C'
CA>> compiler I don't like to hear about compilers being
CA>> 'upgraded' frequently. It's the _code_ that matters more
CA>> than the compiler (my opinion).

MK> I am mostly interested if f95 which is evoloving with gcc4.
MK> I figured I'd play along and see where it goes. If it were
MK> just C then I'd agree with your above sentiment 100%.

CA>> Bad code + optimizing compiler = cr*p binaries

CA>> Good code + obsolete compiler = working binaries

MK> :-)

CA>> If your telnet terminal does not recognize kermit, of
CA>> course that option won't work for you. ;-)

MK> Not at the moment. I have the source though so it isn't the
MK> issue. Also I'd want to use the daemon (server) on the BBS
MK> so that it would be an option to a user. However I'd
MK> probably be the only user of it. All the locals are still
MK> using IE although some of them are starting to see why I
MK> only use Linux.

The "Kermit Team" sells a K95 browser type package for Windows
and NetTerm (what I use) can also do kermit transfers. Juge.com
offers kermit transfers as does docs.place but the WildCat
implementation is locked at a very small packet size which
_should_ be a sliding window but isn't.

MK> I am picking away at them and doing my best to get them
MK> Fidoing but it looks to me that I am going to have to alter
MK> the way they do Fido wrt the rest of the Fido world in
MK> order to get them chatting. They do contribute to my
MK> messaging every once and awhile. Their machines can't do
MK> Fido which is why I figure I need to change the offlining a
MK> tad so that they can use whatever they have to achieve that
MK> end.

With all the internet forums (even I have one), blogs, and
wikis not to mention usenet I'm not sure how much people have
remaining they feel a need to discuss?
