Hello Maurice -

CA>> The Russians had been using their own version of DOS,
CA>> PTSDOS in one their satellites.

MK> I see how well the Russian economy is doing so they are a
MK> good benchmark for all things DOS. Right?

I don't think there is a direct correlation between the two.

CA>> PTS-DOS is certified by the Russian Ministry of Defense
CA>> and was used on the Russian satellites 'Uragan'. NASA is
CA>> using DOS and kermit within the International Space
CA>> Station (ISS).

MK> I've heard from realiable sources what is REALLY used for
MK> the mission critical apps.

CA>> See: http://www.devedia.com/dosghost/forum/mesg/222.htm

MK> They can keep them. I already know without having to search.

The above URL to my forum contains a link to an article about
the use of DOS and Kermit in the ISS. I don't think many people
are aware of that.

CA>> I did Google for "Linux ISS" but didn't find anything
CA>> specific other than those who _want_ linux to be used.

MK> Good for google. I already know. They are in the business
MK> of making money and not hardcore information. Mostly a
MK> waste of bandwidth that has deteriorated as of late. I
MK> could say the same about so-called 'news' these days,
MK> especially the online crap. It is all about money and
MK> little, if any, truth - whatever that means.

Truth is a relative term derived from the perspective of the
truth teller. My 'truths' are not going to be a match for other
people's 'truths'.

CA>> Dell is selling a computer with no OS installed but
CA>> includes FreeDOS on a CD to use for installation purposes
CA>> for whatever OS is to be installed. IBM's hard drive
CA>> install/maintenance software is a floppy disk image using
CA>> DRDOS. There are more.

MK> Good for them. What does that have to do with what is best?

I wasn't attempting to decide which is 'best', only that DOS is
not really as dead as people think it is. It's just taken for
granted and not always noticed when it is being used.

MK> I'd be willing to stack a customized ttylinux maintenance
MK> stuff against DR-DOS. I am willing to bet that you couldn't
MK> even boot DR-DOS on any of my systems whereas ttylinux can,
MK> as well as any Dell, IBM, whatever. I already know this. I
MK> can prove it too.

I believe you.

MK>>> 10 years ago. Keep up with the past old man!!! ;-)

CA>> See above. :-)

MK> You too. Drop by sometime and I'll show you what the good
MK> stuff REALLY is and not what is simply advertising to get
MK> you to buy stuff you never needed in the first place.

I agree but I tend to follow the path of _less_ (not least)
resistance. I use whatever falls within my reach until
something better comes into play. I can't use hardware I don't
have or can't afford.

CA>> I can only guess that certain linux software wants to find
CA>> one of the Gnome or KDE or ??? GUI desktops.

MK> Dependancies. Those particular ones don't exist here. Funny
MK> thing is that the apps I use will run on the above whereas
MK> Gnome and/or KDE apps won't run on my systems ... unless I
MK> want them to and take care of their overbloated neediness
MK> ... which I don't btw. They can keep them.

Understood. I do have some interest in digital video (as a
hobbyist) which, at present, seems to require either Windows or
OSX. I realize that the Mac would be preferable but it is also
more expensive. For a hobbyist probably a bit _too_ expensive.

CA>>>> The Windows versions based on the NT kernel seem to do
CA>>>> OK.

MK>>> Not here it doesn't. Ziltch uptime for NT.

CA>> Yes, I realize that you don't use Windows but speaking
CA>> from my own experience W2K isn't as flakey as the other
CA>> versions of Windows are.

MK> I've seen it trash harddrives. I had to repair some off w2k
MK> systems. These daze it is flash disks screwed up by XP.
MK> It's been done and I can prove that too.

I belived what you say but based on my own experiences 75% of
all hard drive crashes were caused by the loose-nut at the
keyboard and a small percentage have been power failures during
a write operation and a very few from lightning surges.
