It seems that DOS is useable. It's used on the ISS.

The DOS MSKermit that Professor Doupnik has shepherded for many
years is a full bore kermit with everything that kermit can do
included. He has done an amazing job and continues to improve
when ways of doing so come to his attention. He is _not_ one of
'The Kermit Team'. He is his _own_ team. :-)

I couldn't argue _against_ the use of linux. I only know that
many continue to use DOS in the shadows. :-)

Probably. It's been a long time now since I wrote low level
code to manipulate hardware directly.

I don't hear about any linux video editors though. Doesn't mean
there aren't any, could be I'm just not reading in the right
places. :-)

Power outages during a write wouldn't necessarily cause any
physical damage since most (all?) new hard drives use voice
coils for the heads and will automatically 'park' themselves.
Users can and will do some really strange things like turning
off the machine before the OS is entirely shut down. There are
a myriad of possibilities beyond OS failures.
