Hello Maurice -

--8<--cut

CA>> If you could list examples I would save the list for
CA>> future reference. :-)

MK> Sure. Still tweaking on some of them and especially now
MK> that the 'new' graphics card is onboard. Is it ever weird
MK> but 'out of the box' at least the setting for 16-bit
MK> framebuffers work the same for matroxfb. So far everything
MK> else is different. Also X is having a problem with it
MK> except using the Linux 16-bit framebuffer driver. glx sure
MK> looks good on here. Obviously I need to do some heavy-duty
MK> playing with this.

MK> What are you interested in? DVD playing? TV stuff? MP3
MK> playing? The whole shebang?

Eventually 'the whole shebang'. :-)

MK> As for graphics editting go with the gimp. I have yet to
MK> see anything better and/or as inclusive as to formats.

I have a GNU/Win port of the GIMP along with the required GTK
here on my W2K machine. I am impressed at what GIMP can do but
the 'controls' are a bit awkward for me right now.

CA>> I lean towards configurable applications and am more than
CA>> willing to put in the time to learn the terminology used
CA>> for advanced functions.

MK> I think the gimp is like that.

For me GIMP will definitely require some time to get
comfortable with it.

CA>> With Lucasfilms and others moving to linux I would hope
CA>> some portion of what they learn in the process would leak
CA>> down to us mere mortals in opensource applications. :-)

MK> Heh, heh. Yeah that would be nice.

It might even happen at some point. Lucas isn't really a 'bad
guy' I don't think? He might feel generous one day. :-)

CA>> SourcForge pages are hard to decipher with _any_ browser.
CA>> They are a perfect example of the old saying "Programmers
CA>> write obfuscated documentation". :-)

MK> Something like that.

CA>> As I've mentioned below, a livecd with the necessary
CA>> software to locate, login, download, read/reply, and
CA>> upload FIDO echo messages would help.

MK> I've always like the pointing philosophy for that. That way
MK> the user learns something about nodalization if they decide
MK> to go it alone. Those are the easiest people to help, and
MK> often don't need any help, to set a node up later. Even if
MK> they don't want nodification it still works out good seeing
MK> they are using more or less the same setup as a node,
MK> except less needy.

I've always believed that being a point was a bit cramped. I
prefer to go to wherever I choose to get FIDO echos. I don't
want to be 'married' to just one source.

CA>> For access to the bulk of FIDO BBS and echo messagebase
CA>> zmodem is the most efficient tool for uploading and
CA>> downloading.

MK> No it isn't.

Of the available protocols from existing BBS software to
up/download QWK packets it is.

CA>> BBBS and possibly a few others have been testing other
CA>> protocols but for the most part it's best to use zmodem
CA>> right now. Tomorrow I hope to see FTP up/downloading if
CA>> FIDO lives that long.

MK> I am doing it that way. Have been for some time now. I
MK> haven't used zmodem for over a decade now. That got ditched
MK> with DOS. :-)

There were two maybe three BBS trying to use FTP transfers of
QWK that I knew of. I tried using them but two shut down. The
third, a BBBS was deleting any of my messages he personally
disagreed with which means I stopped using his BBS.

I know there is one trying out a usenet methodology and
protocol but my offline reader requires QWK packets and I don't
want to use a usenet reader for FIDO messages.

MK> Also using binkd but one of my points is purely ftp. It
MK> works fantastic.

If FTP had been planned for and implemented seamlessly into the
BBS software that should pose no problems.

CA>> I'm not disputing the rates of compression, I'm saying the
CA>> majority of the BBS don't offer Bzip2 compression (last
CA>> time I checked).

MK> Whatever. They aren't going anywhere fast.

People who are new to FIDO echos might also be new to linux. To
expect them to absorb all that new information is difficult
enough without adding the confusion of multiple definitions of
what a 'zip' file is.

CA>> Every conversation about ditching QWK ends with no
CA>> commitment to create a replacement.

MK> Raw pkt's work okay. Offline then can be a garden variety
MK> Fido editor such as messageed. That works and doesn't
MK> require the sysop from jumping through any extra hoops to
MK> make it work for all concerned.

For existing BBS software QWK has been around for a long long
time and should be a part of the BBS software already. Not
really 'extra' work.

CA>> FIDO users with websites could add a link to other
CA>> webpages with FIDO BBS listings on their index pages or
CA>> create their own web page of BBS addresses.

MK> Possibly.

CA>> Online reading/replying is a bit tedious (usually). I was
CA>> referring to an installed editor for the offline reader to
CA>> access.

MK> golded, messageed, whatever. That is the simplest scheme
MK> all the way around. Seeing that any Fido node is required
MK> to support pkt format then why not go all the way with it?

From my perspective the 'why not' is that I don't want to be a
point.

CA>> A minimal linux would be acceptable if the purpose was to
CA>> access FIDO message bases.

MK> Piece of cake. Just say the word and I'll do one up for
MK> you. I can get it to point off the node here. No zmodem but
MK> I think you'd prefer something better.

I wasn't referring to something for me. I have two linux installs
that can access FIDO, have an OLR plus editor, and use ztelnet
for up/downloading of QWK packets. I was referring to a
'package' for people to use that would get them to FIDO with
the easiest learning curve. From that they can add, subtract,
modify, whatever.
