Hello Maurice -

CA>> If by 'native' you refer to software included with the
CA>> installation of Windows I can't really say. I've used
CA>> third party apps for telnet and FTP and never bothered to
CA>> try M$ versions.

MK> I've seen them in action. They don't follow standards or at
MK> least no the accepted and long established ones.

Interesting thing about 'standards', the W3C weilds the newest
'standards' like a club and meanwhile webpages are 'broken' by
browsers that either were written prior to the new standards or
by programmers who chose to ignore them. The OGG and PNG
formats intended to replace proprietary sound/graphic MP3/GIF
formats were a long time coming and even now there is a good
deal of software that doesn't _fully_ support either OGG or PNG.

CA>> I realize that 'windows users' are often computer
CA>> illiterates but there are also college grads with CS
CA>> degrees who are windows users and I suspect they can
CA>> 'handle it'. :-)

MK> They are too busy playing games to be bothered. Isn't why
MK> they install Windows?

I think they install windows to earn money for
food/clothing/shelter?

CA>> My first two modems were both 300 baud. :-)

MK> 2400 here but I never bothered with buying a PC until they
MK> actually could do something constructive. By that time 2400
MK> baud modems were the mainstay of the dialup crowd. Not many
MK> of them back then.

I jumped from 300 to a USR 14400 baud (and it still works).

CA>> At the start (for me) all BBS were private and there was
CA>> no fidonet. Many were 'ring backs' that ran on Heath
CA>> Zenith computers using C/PM. They were 'by invitation
CA>> only'.

MK> The first for me was the University of Saskatchewan Library
MK> which was running on VAX/VMS at the time. Basically it was
MK> an online database for all the books on all the libraries
MK> on campus. Worked good until they went to httpd and then it
MK> really sucked since lynx was still in it's infancy a the
MK> time and menus were all screwy on the screen. I liked the
MK> BBS better to be honest. Worked great with telnet and the
MK> menus were neat, tidy and readable.

LINKS and LINKS2 do a great job maintaining a well organized
display.

MK>>> You must have led a very sheltered life.

CA>> Have you ever lurked in the sysop echos of fidonet?

MK> I've been known to post in a few of them. Why do you ask?

The vulgar language, hate-mail, accusations, etc. were an
education. Nasty bunch IMO.

CA>> Nope. Some began with Apple computers, many started with
CA>> C/PM machines, and others began by using DOS machines. The
CA>> TRS80s were online at the start as were Commodores and RS
CA>> Color Computers. :-)

MK> So what happened to them?

They got old.

CA>> Some of the best BBS were running on TRS80s and usually
CA>> written by the sysop who owned the machine.

MK> And what happened to them?

They got old.

--8<--cut

CA>> Hyperterminal PE isn't what I would call 'crippled'. I
CA>> don't _like_ it's user interface but it's totally
CA>> functional.

MK> How many Windows users actually use it?

Quite a few AFAIK.

MK> Can it handle standard telnet on a network connection or do
MK> you need more of that third party software you were talking
MK> about to handle proper networking?

I don't really know what Hyperterminal can do, I've only used
it a half dozen times while trying to help others get it
configured for their system.

CA>> Even with text color 'cues' make using software easier.
CA>> ATP OLR uses colored text here on this machine.

MK> I don't mind that as log as the background is dark and the
MK> text in bright colours.

Well I rewrote the code and changed the colors to what I wanted
them to be so yes, the background is black. :-)

MK> I hate most ansi bulletins on BBS's these days as the
MK> colours they often pick are too dark and I have to strain
MK> my eyes trying to read them.

I did pick one blue that is too dark. I need to get my other
machines here and redo that color and compile a new binary.

MK>>> Yes but if nobody can use the service in the first place
MK>>> it doesn't matter how the sysop treats them since there
MK>>> will never be any users to look down their nose at.

CA>> That's funny in a sad/dark sort of a way. LOL

MK> But true as often sad/dark things are.

Yes, as in "Paris is burning". :-(
