If just for visuals then that is definetly overkill.  That is far beyond what
the human eye can percieve.  For raw data it might be resolvable to certain
equipment and mathematically meaningful but then that same data would only be
meaningful in a plot of some sort rather then a picture.  Without a high degree
of variation within a picture is highly doubtful more then 16-bit graphics are
required.  As for movies the addition of motion (action) would conmplicate this
but even there 24-bit can be overkill if we're talking cartoons, nevermind the
addition of multichannel audio.

As for astronomy using 48-bit graphics, I think whoever came up with that
format needs to give her/his head a shake.  Unless they are recording
unpercievable information that requires that many bits to 'see' small, normally
unpercievable variations, then they are being totally wasteful.  Mind you that
wouldn't surprise me.  As a rule, 32-bit floats are the norm in most scientific
data I've ever seen, and has absolutely nothing to do with graphics or audio
... even when it does.

Overkill, especially for any usage I'd personally have for it.  I won't
complain about that but then again I probably will never use that functionality
ever.

Definetly has more uses then a regular computer monitor.  Works excellent with
a vcr.

For sure.  Besides I never did get into CD's, other then for booting and now
that is history.  Now I highly regret buying a DVD burner as that is even more
crappy for anything real and meaningful and totally useless for what most
people would want one for.  Also I hear that there are further changes planned
there which will make them even more useless.
