Intro stuff. The rebate check promises to be $110!

MK> Okay. I've heard of D-Link so that is a start. I'll take
MK> the liberty of seeing what I can find out about it.

Not to worry. I d-loaded all sorts of pdfs on the two D-link devices. One, a
10/100 switch, ($14. DSS-5+) and the other an 11g bridge. ($22. DWL-810 but
don't quote me on this one.) Add that to the 10/100 router->11g, and two 11g
USB transceivers, ($10 each!) and I'm good to go!

[PS: I accessed the Gigafast router page via W'98, then the D-Link page turned
inaccessible. At least both seem to be working, even though some Java (or was
it an Active-X) element doesn't seem to be.]

MK> As far as I know XP doesn't have any usb issues.

No, USB was well supported by W'98SE. 98 uses 16-bit <?> drivers, and can
support everything, just not as fast AIU.

MK> your way. That floppy idea must have been an extremely

You don't want to know. I finally ran Linux's fdisk on the 1.44s, and deleted
four bogus partitions, none of them ending on a boundary, or some such
clap-trap. From there, you heard about the BS I was seeing trying to coheres
them off those floppies.

The community connection is less than a 5 minute drive from here. They're the
same four nodes that were there before, but with *some* security precautions.
Updating to XP, and the newest Dell lineup, (I never said they were perfect.
;-) seems to have speed things along nicely. I offered to teach some basic
'puter skills to newbies, and my services if someone kicks some cords out...

Reseting doesn't fix it, or it is so low in priority... Shesh, you guys see the
most blown gear, due to unclean power.

MK> Even that part is debatable but it doesn't matter since it
MK> seems to work okay as long as it doesn't have access to

Ya... I think I'll have to put more faith in the 11g security. When you've got
nothing to lose, you can afford to give it away. (-|

MK>> Sounds great! We'll see you when you get here.
JB> I might have to sell the house, to pay for the gas.

MK> True. It isn't quite as bad as it was a few months back
MK> but still expensive for sure. Mind you isn't it cheaper
 MK> there? Usually is.

Compared to Vancouver proper, at least. 88.? I payed just days ago.

 JB> Toss me an e-mail.

MK> I don't think I have your address. Try netmailing me

MK> she still likes me. Shhhhhhh.

Little does she know? <LOL> I meant to say netmail. Because of Multimail,
and/or the Max door, netmail, AND our email gate are rather a pain. I'll look
for evidence of earlier troubleshooting, to see if I can repeat success.

JB> Huh... Wha? We could take the topic to home'n garden... (Or whatever

MK> Is it still alive? It is winter also so I don't know if
MK> there would be much traffic there.

That's the idea. AFAIK, it still exists, but everybody seems to go into
hibernation for the winter.

JB> Sounds to me like you have a pretty good start. One fella is
 JB> soldering caps on [...] JB> you don't
JB> need to take minutes at meetings.

MK> We eventually get around to it. Yeah it is a good
MK> situation we have going. I talked to him about mencoder
MK> and the win-tv card the other day and he told me he is
MK> still working on the p4 board he has allocated towards
MK> that end and was just finishing a custom Linux install he
MK> was working on. One step at a time.

Well, see??? You're an affliction. <G+D>
