yup... but i'll reiterate "there's not any on properly run systems." ;) 
doesn't matter if they are on the internet, fidonet, or foobarnet OB-)

its not accessing fidonet, really... its simply a matter of having tools that
access the same message base data files that the bbs does... i can use any of
numerous editors to access the JAM message bases my system stores messages
in... accessing the file areas is nothing more than going thru the directories
;)

IIRC, /all/ alt.* groups are unmoderated (in the traditional usenet way)...
comp.* and such are all moderated... traditional usenet moderation is done by
the articles being emailed to the moderator who then approves them, marks them
as approved and then puts them in the newsgroup... no moderator approval, no
post in the newsgroup... gotta be a real PITA in areas with hundreds or
thousands of messages a day...

a lot of news groups have taken to the reactive methodology of fidonet but they
also have one thing better that we don't have though it has been done to an
extent in the past... that being the ability to cancel messages... reactive
moderation is moderating after the message has already been posted... in
fidonet, that means that if someone posted a list of credit card numbers, it'd
get out there... on a news server, the message would get out there but could be
removed by the moderator... in fidonet, the moderator can't do that... that
would be up to each bbs owner /if/ they do that kind of stuff... doing that
kind of stuff could also open one up to legal problems if one doesn't catch
everything...

true... one problem that we have yet to overcome is m$' underhanded way of
shooting bbs' down and putting them out to pasture... that was done by them
putting the link on the desktop to access the internet rather than putting it
in a folder along with hyperterm links to bbs' as they could have done... with
all the bbs lists out there and the high schoolers they use for summer jobs,
this could have been done very easily...

this is true... it was true back in the heyday, too... as for telnet, it really
is going by the wayside due to the lack of security... everything in the telnet
stream flows plain jane... with today's internet and all the rogues out there,
one should almost be using a secure pipe for everything they do...
