Ärende: new guy in Linux
========================
Hey WAYNE!

The only problem I encountered with usb1.1 was on one machine with a 80G drive
on a usb ide adapter. It worked okay on a different machine using usb1.1
except that one has intel chipsets while the other has with the problem has via
chipsets. Also I have an external sata/usb case/adapter and partitioned a 300G
sata drive so that the first 32G could be formatted to fat32 and tested the usb
connection on the neighbour's win98 box with usb1.1 which could 'see' that
partition and read/write to it. The rest I split into three ext3 partitions
and plugged it into an external sata port on the linux box and it can 'see',
read/write to all the partitions and also can fdisk that entire drive, all
300G's. I also transferred a fully bloated iso over to the fat32 partition
using the sata interface and the transfer speed was unreal. I have yet to see
anything that fast. Also that iso could be successfully burned using either
linux (cdrecord) or whatever my neighbour uses on win98 (I forget at the
moment, I think Nero) and was bootable later (a slackware-10.2 install cd).
After witnessing that I discovered I don't need a burner and would rather spend
time working out how to install to a target drive using a bash scripted
installation scheme straight from any loop mounted iso. :-)

Same with mplayer.

I prefer mplayer to be quite honest but liked videolan last time I looked at
it. I give mplayer the edge simply because of mga_vid (works on both the
console and x) and mencoder with the xvidcore libs and lame dependancies. That
works awesome and produces phenomenal mpeg4's. I have yet to see anything
better.

It isn't hard. All you need to do is get it booting to a framebuffer console
and then the rest will fall into place nicely. I think the matroxfb is the
best, especially with mga_vid. Way better then anything else I have
encountered no matter what OS. Even my neighbour agrees and is what sold him
on linux to start with.

WC> They're making power supplies up to and over 500 watts these days.

Yeah me too. I like some of the new cabling schemes where you can add exactly
what is needed. However that isn't going to quite help out wrt the clustering
idea but I already know where I can get what I do need for that. However,
first things first so that idea is on hold until I can afford to take care of
it. In the meantime I will get one going and take it from there as I can use a
regular AT or ATX ps for that. I am in no rush.

Life is good,
Maurice
