If it were Fedora, or worse SuSE, then I'd agree.  The main thing in
Slackware's favour is that they are conservative about development and tend to
be the stablist system there is, although if Debian wasn't so anal about their
packaging/databasing scheme they would be okay too.

I noticed when I checked out Fedora they have 'dialog' which I found
interesting.  If they decided to lose their silly packaging scheme (rpm) they
might actually have something to be concerned about.  SuSE?  I doubt they will
ever get their act together.

Right.  All that is on the second install iso.  You could install that later
once you get things up to snuff boot-wise.

All the development libs you need, including the ones kde requires, are in 'L'
except for QT which is in 'KDE' on the second install iso.  Worry about that
later.

If KDE then it'll install to /opt which could be a seperate partition.  I
forget offhand how much space it requires fully bloated but offhand 500M should
be ample.  I'll check later.

Yep.  'Written' primarily for Windows people who can't read anyhow.  Just put
on a few spinney icons and a few silly sound bites and they think everything is
fine.

For sure.  Gotta love the commandline stuff.  Definetly the way to go wrt
downloads.

Heh, heh.  Something like that.

I preferred just scripting it out and using the commandline to put in any
variables.  That way I could change things on the fly and didn't have to know
beforehand what might be required for any given connection.  All I had to do
was make sure ppp, dhcpcd, and simular tools were onboard and ready for action.
 With the same connection, such as cable or adsl, then startup scripts are the
way to go since the connection is always the same on every bootup.  For a
travelling laptop, that isn't always the case.

I wish.  I haven't had cake in years and years.  I can't even remember the last
cake I ever had.

You can do that in a .bash_profile in your user account(s).  Just be careful
you don't alias whatever to a builtin command.

'Advanced Bash Scripting' is really good, better then the manpage for bash. 
Tons of example scripts too.  Works great with lynx.

For sure.  I am sure you'll get there fastest with Slack.  Rock solid in
comparison to the rest and far more flexible given it didn't succumb to a silly
packaging/databasing scheme that requires a marriage licence like the rest.
