I am the opposite.  I have a 800MHz C3 little board as the wordly connected guy
and the beefier machine for playing/compiling/archiving/etc.  Anything
important gets backed up onoffline drives (hotswappable).

True which is why I no longer test releases.  I just look at their main
packages (glibc, gcc, kernel version, and a few other basic tools) to see where
their heads are at.  That is usually enough for me to decide where they are at.

I never heard of a 930.  Are you sure it isn't 933?  I have a matched pair of
those on my main 'play' station.

I try to find unused older stuff before resorting to used.  As far as new stuff
I have yet to see anything of interest, except the sata which I now have on my
older stuff.  :-)

Right.  I forgot about that.  Anyhow my neighbour also has a burner, and a
laser printer, so I think I can safely rid myself of CD and DVD burning.  I
haven't booted any up or even put one in the drive lately so I am not sure it I
even need a rom anymore.  I'll keep one just to play it safe but this all seems
familiar to me (floppy drives) so I think I can wean myself successfully.

Yeah.  That has happened to me far too often.

Mine was on a 486 and it got retired years and years ago.  I still have one 486
but it needs some work.  Aldo want to make it pure DC powered and need a couple
new batteries to wire into the inverter for trickle charging.  Also, also want
to find a lowpower consumption tft display.
